I don’t know about you, but as unhealthy as the sun’s harmful rays are, I have a hard time staying out of the sun on those blessed days when it actually decides to come out of hiding and make an appearance. After all, who can resist a fresh sun-kissed glow (when it doesn’t start out as a gnarly burn, that is)? Luckily for us sun-hungry bathing beauties, plenty of our favorite top-of-the-line cosmetics lines have hopped onto the bronzing bandwagon and offer loads of options when it comes to getting that summer-worthy warm color sun-free, faking it on a day-to-day basis with natural-looking bronzer or shimmery body makeup, and sunscreen and after-sun lotion for safer outdoor basking. The adage “live fast, die young” applies to few people quite as well as it does Talitha Getty. A victim of her own excessive lifestyle, the Dutch-descended Getty died in 1971 at age 30 of a drug overdose, yet left behind a style legacy that’s become a cultural touchstone: designers as disparate as Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Michael Kors, and Christian Dior are among the many who’ve cited Getty’s signature Marrakesh-meets-mod fashions as inspiration for various collections. Gamine, almond-eyed, and possessed of a confident style that drew on the twin influences of the Moroccan souks she frequented and the London-based Swinging ‘60s crowd she ran with, Getty was immortalized in Patrick Lichfield’s iconic photograph of her and husband John Paul Getty, Jr., on the rooftop of their infamous home in Morocco dubbed “The Pleasure Palace.” The image captured not just the beautifully tragic air that surrounded the Gettys, but also Talitha’s groundbreaking boho-chic aesthetic. Flowing caftans, mounds of costume jewelry, fur-trimmed mod dresses, filmy silk scarves, and gauzy harem pants were some of the hallmarks of her repertoire but, more than that, it was her laissez-faire, creative approach to blending style genres that prompted designers like Yves Saint Laurent to declare, “When I knew Talitha Getty my vision completely changed.” Getty’s seemingly direct fashion descendants include Jade Jagger, Nicole Richie, and Kelly Killoren Bensimon, the latter having proclaimed her admiration of Getty openly. The hallways of Llanview High School are filled with excitement and anticipation as all the kids prepare for prom! This year’s event is not, unfortunately, entirely musical as it was a couple years back. However, we do get the Pussycat Dolls performing, so that’s some consolation. If there’s one thing we love about prom besides stolen kisses behind the bleachers, it’s gorgeous prom fashion! So we dialed up “One Life to Live” costume designer extraordinaire Susan Gammie to get some dish on what all the kids will be wearing on the big night. One quick glimpse of the inside of my purse is all it takes to figure out that it’s really just a big makeup bag in disguise. Every time I leave the house for anything more than just a quick trip to the grocery store, I can’t help but just grab every beauty product I put on that day (which can include but is not necessarily limited to: bulky foundation/blush/bronzer compacts, two or three pots of shadow, mascara, brow and eyeliner pencils, lipgloss...)—I was a Girl Scout and therefore I will always compulsively be prepared! But I have to admit, hefting around all those products can be pretty ridiculous, not to mention realistically unnecessary on roughly 95% of the outings I bring them along. One solution (other than getting a grip on myself and only bringing the bare-bones must-haves) is consolidation, which is exactly what Guerlain had in mind when they invented their handy Jewel Lipstick Compact. I’ve said it time and again, but in case you didn’t know, I’m all about classics. I own them all, from dark blue straight leg jeans and white t-shirts in all cuts and styles, to, of course, canvas sneakers. There’s even a piece highlighting one of our favorite Brooklyn designers, Daniel Moyer of Daniel Moyer Designs. 3Rings offers reviews of a range of product designers, from Warp Designs’ Perforated Steel Vases to the delicate lamps of Levent and Romme. We really love the many designers who are using green design principles - check out the fun bamboo plywood furniture from Boo-Coup. Alicita Rodriquez introduced us to two great wallpaper designers - Shanan Campanaro and Jill Malek. Campanaro’s Eskayel line is based on her original artwork.
