If you’ve been going through Michael Kors withdrawals due to his erratic attendance record on the latest Project Runway season’s judging panel, you may be happy to see that he’s more than making up for it at his “day job.” The designer’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection focused on architectural shapes and his own modern play on the power suit, boasting a number of patterned three-piece ensembles and updated shift dresses for today’s business bigwigs. While still managing to keep his classic ready-to-wear silhouettes, Kors strayed slightly from his signature understated elegance and threw in some bold cut-outs, edgy plastic insets, and a variety of metallic and splatter paint patterns one might not typically see in the straight-laced business world. Take a look at the slideshow for some of the runway highlights!
Color Palette: white, black, soft grey, lavender, sky blue

Immersed in a digital age where Flip camcorders and iPhone cameras and Twitpic rule the world of picture-taking, it can be easy to lose touch with the retro photo technology of yore (or even of just a couple months ago). Celebrate the way things were with this Film Roll Alarm Clock. Perfect for the film buff or photography major (or for anyone who accidentally smashed their old alarm clock in a half-asleep AM rage), this roll of film won’t help you take any quality pictures, but it will help you wake up and get yourself to class on time! After all, considering the alarm clock is just about the most loathsome timepiece in existence, you might as well make the dreaded early-morning blaring more tolerable with a dose of cuteness!
Price: $62

I didn’t partake in any Fashion’s Night Out activities-- too much temptation to spend my life savings. But this Sephora event in New York looks like it was awesome. Temptu, famous for their airbrush makeup, created living art at the Sephora on 5th Avenue, recreating work they’ve done for cinema and fashion. They crafted a variety of looks, like those from an Italian Vogue spread, Robert DeNiro’s character in Cape Fear (if only DeNiro had looked so yummy), and the movie The Stepford Wives. I’m not quite sure where I would wear numbers all over my face, but I totally would if I could find the right occasion! They really drew a crowd as they airbrushed models in the storefront windows for eight hours. They also lured tons of customers looking to get airbrushed and photographed for a mock fashion mag cover. Now that’s a good time! Fall has arrived, but don’t let the colder weather and grey skies dampen your style! Some of your summer staples just need a little more coverage before they can become fall favorites, and while tights and a pair of hot boots help, sleek and chic outerwear is the key. Whether the stars this week have you running between work luncheons, meeting new friends after hours, or just strolling through town with your sweetie, they’ve found the perfect outer layer for you! Light jackets, classic cardigans, funky sweaters ... whatever your style, the planets help locate the best piece for you to enhance your looks, and then sexily shrug off when you get to where you’re going. Is a cropped blazer what you’ve been missing from your fall wardrobe, Scorpio? Cancers, it might not be a bad idea to pick up one of those beautiful slouchy cardigans you’ve been eying; you’ll wear it over and over! Check out the slideshow to see how the astrological powers are helping you stay warm and fashion-forward!

This season, Ralph Lauren was back with the classically preppy looks we’ve come to expect from the designer (variations on the blazer, lust-worthy dresses), but included quite a few unexpectedly refreshing ones as well. I loved how many ensembles erred on the side of masculinity- for example, one was comprised of boyfriend jeans and a menswear-inspired shirt, then topped off with a blazer, beret, and chunky belt, only to be offset by a pair of glistening t-strap heels. Combined with natural-looking makeup and unfussy hair, each look was all the more believable. Quirky, tattered denim overalls were about as surprising to see as the head to toe denim look, but the “fresh from the farm” approach added a relaxed vibe to the typically put-together show. Crisp white layers were followed by sheer separates in cool blues, and a particularly striking iridescent floor-length shirt dress was just the thing to finish off a collection perfect for achieving that chic but not overly calculated country club look. Despite various teleprompter mishaps, the overuse of the Kanye interruption joke, and the Sarah McLachlan-induced sob fest, the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards still managed to be hotter than hot (both literally and figuratively—apparently the weather was beyond sweaty)! While 30 Rock and Madmen took home the night’s biggest prizes (surprise, surprise), everyone was a winner on the red carpet (well, nearly everyone). Blake Lively looked like her typical glamazon self in a gorgeous red gown with a seriously plunging neckline and Kim Kardashian’s dress was so skintight, she reportedly had to be sewn into it (it was worth it)! Even primetime’s funny gals like Alyson Hannigan and Jenna Fischer glammed it up Cinderella-style in dazzling strapless floor-length numbers. Anna Sui has definitely kept herself busy this season, between her much anticipated Gossip Girl-themed Target collaboration and the stunningly rich circus-themed Spring 2010 collection she debuted just days ago at New York Fashion Week. Preppy separates like cable knit sweaters, pleated skirts, and coordinating jackets were given a playful spin with Peter Pan-collared tops, vividly printed silk shirts, and the most whimsical patchwork jacket imaginable. A steady stream of purple and grey looks gave way to splashes of pink, green, and orange for some eye-brightening variety. Patterns appeared to be haphazardly layered together at first, but with a more careful perusal, the mixing and matching produced an end result that was actually quite seamless- in some cases, it was difficult to see where one piece ended and another began! Purely intriguing, I tell you. My favorite look was the printed shorts and tie-neck blue peeking out from a marching band-inspired vest- and who could forget the sequined mask (worn as a headband- kind of brilliant, right?) on the always adorable Sasha Pivovarova? Kim Kardashian’s playing a smart game! The reality show star and gossip circuit regular has signed up with OK! Magazine to talk all things beauty. After finally taking the plunge in the world of brunette-to-blond and back again (and applying what must be gobs of lipgloss and mascara before every event), Kim’s definitely qualified. Why is this a smart move from Kim, and not just for the obvious extra notoriety and attention? Now she might be able to keep herself in-the-know about nasty rumors that come up about her, and she will be able to avoid any particularly egregious lies being spread by certain magazines. We love Kim’s look, and if there’s one thing she’s got down pat, it’s got to be makeup! We’ll be reading her tips and critiquing on the regular, but we have no doubt that she’s succeed. For her Spring 2010 collection, Charlotte Ronson was inspired by the ballerinas of New York, specifically the way they look when leaving dance class and mix their dance attire with their regular clothes. To enhance this motif, hair stylist Allen Ruiz from Avon and makeup artist Charlotte Willard for Maybelline created just-walked-out-of-dance-class looks that were fresh and natural-looking. The hair was pulled back into chic, slightly undone buns and the makeup was kept soft, sheer and translucent. I got the chance to hang out backstage before the show to talk to the stylists and watch the looks come to life.

From eye shadow sticks that double as an eye liner to dresses that can be worn in multiple ways, I’m a total sucker for things that can multi-task. With limited space in my room (because it’s filled with clothes, of course!) I’ve got to make my decor count. Lately, I’ve been listening to my music through my dinky laptop speakers and when my desk lamp finally blew out, I had the perfect replacement in mind. The Hi-Fi Hi-Light from PB Teen is a desk lamp, a charging station for your iPod, as well as a speaker! Talk about getting more bang for your buck. While it’s great in my tiny room, this is also a good choice for an office or dorm room. With the desk space you saved by not getting a separate speaker system and desk lame, you now have more room for your accessories!

Fun and retro, cameo jewelry is the perfect way to give your look a little vintage flava—without getting scabies from rooting through piles of secondhand threads at a thrift store. These carved pieces (traditionally seen displaying floral bouquets or a person’s bust) are popping up on everything from pins to bracelets to earrings. We can’t get enough of this pair by Del Gatto. Made from Caribbean seashell, they’ve got a charming, neo-classic feel. Unfortunately, the $376 price tag could set you back a bit. No worries, we found these gorgeous cheaper ones by Sardelli for 50 bucks. Almost identical to the pricier pair, our frugal find is sure to make more than a cameo appearance in your wardrobe. The Milly Spring/Summer 2010 “Punk Meets Prep” collection was high on my list of Fashion Week favorites. This season, designer Michelle Smith mostly abandoned her signature bright shades and bold prints and opted for a palette primarily of black and ecru with the occasional pop of color. The collection stayed true to Milly’s signature femme aesthetic but the sweetness was offset by an edgy, punk-rock sensibility. Floaty silhouettes were toughened up with studs, embellishments, and layered jewelry (all from Milly’s new jewelry collection). There were plenty of signature Milly staples—mini shifts, elbow-sleeve coats, delicate blouses, metallic jacquard—but the rich shades and sexy shapes infused these classics with a fabulous edge and radiated a stronger sense of bold confidence. Some of my absolute favorites included all of the hand-beaded knit sweaters and tops, a strapless metallic jacquard corset mini dress, and a black silk gauze trapeze dress (I will definitely be snagging that one the second it hits the racks!). From uptown prep to downtown punk and everything in between, this collection was full of must-have pieces that are both modern and timeless—take a look at the slideshow to check them out!

Even from just a cursory flip-through of Fashion Week photos, it’s easy to tell which stylish starlets just can’t stay away from the Bryant Park tents. After all, when every dress, purse, and sequin you’ve ever worn is documented by the press, it’s easy to get addicted to front-row views of your next big-night red carpet ensembles. Certain celebs like Jessica Alba and Alicia Keys took breaks from their busy schedules to pop into designer favorites like Narciso Rodriguez and Giorgio Armani, while other fashion-infatuated gals like Jessica Stroup and Rachel Bilson flocked tirelessly to as many runways as they could handle, from Vivienne Tam to Brian Reyes. And whether you’re a celebrity, designer, model, writer, or shopaholic, there’s no pressure to look your best like there is at New York Fashion Week! Backstage for Twinkle by Wenlan gave the nasty weather outside a bit of a run for its money. The colors were bright, the hairstylists used the rainy clouds to its advantage, and spring was definitely in the air. The hair was kept loose and wavy and the face was vibrant and fresh. John Ruidant of Redken and MAC makeup artist Gianpaolo Ceciliato gave us the rundown on what inspired them and how they created each look.

Fashion Week may be over in New York, but there are still styles and trends to be seen. Did you catch the incredible Kabuki-inspired makeup at Marc Jacobs? If not, jump over to The Beauty Stop for a closer look- just maybe don’t try out each element at the same time- Halloween’s not here yet. Need a new tech toy? Vivienne Tam’s newest HP clutch is definitely one to crave. If you’re still adding to your fall wardrobe (who isn’t?!), check out the super affordable silk t-shirt dress Kristopher Dukes is wanting. Plus, catch stories on affordable handbag choices, top looks from New York Fashion Week, what L.A.M.B. has in store for us for spring, and a pair of particularly lust-worthy Ann Demeulemeester boots.
