I'm a Stylehive editor that brings you the cool trends from the Hive and beyond.
Every week, thousands of stylemakers from across the globe join Stylehive, making it THE destination for what’s happening RIGHT NOW in the wide wide world of style. Every week, we had out Hive Awards to the Stylehivers who captured our - admittedly short - attention spans. This week, check out derniercri (classic with a twist), kaizen (drawn to great design), lifesagasp (ad exec by day, denimista by night), and MsSeven - who grabs our coveted “Commenter Of The Week” trophy! Stylehive talked to celebs Sharon Stone, Jennifer Beals, William Baldwin, Rex Lee, Alan Cumming, David Bromstad, Candis Cayne, and (YUM) Jason Lewis on the red carpet at the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco. SEE THE SLIDESHOW to see what tips I snagged on how to look fabulous, what trends are hot for homes, and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, what Sex and the City hottie Jason Lewis likes on his women!
Last year we featured Cassie Kogler‘s journey from freak to fashion phenom. Since then, she and her flamboyantly fresh line New York Couture have caught fire. Fit for a punk princess, each of Cassie’s one-of-a-kind pieces are hand cut, sewn, and detailed. New York Couture is now sold in over 20 boutiques in Canada, Japan, Panama, and the states (including Patricia Field‘s boutique in NYC). Cassie isn’t surprised she’s Stylehive’s Next Big Thing. “I used to tell people in high school that I was going to be famous. I didn’t know for what...I guess I know now

This week was all about Elle Magazine‘s new EMag launch - Elle Accessories! With so many options, elleaccessories.com is an amazing, and totally fun, online guide, weeding out the clunkers and bringing you instant access to the season’s hottest trends and must-haves. Also, we’ve got a Metropolitan Costume Institute Gala slideshow extravaganza for you to see all the celebs in their finer (and un-finer) wear. And don’t miss our evil poll which pits hiver against hiver in the vote for who has your favorite style! All this and more made this the best week on Stylehive since last week! Get the scoop while it’s hot. Bzz bzz.

TomKat, tofurkey, skorts, mullets...these are all examples of hybrids gone wrong. Just like high heels and sneakers. They’re like oil and water - they just don’t mix. For some reason, they seem to be making a comeback in creations from L.A.M.B., Sketchers, Steve Madden, Ash, and even Pierre Hardy. Sneakers are meant to be comfortable and not heinously high. Rubber soles + laces + high tops + heels/wedges = tacky. We need to stick with combinations that work. Like KFC/Taco Bell. Oh yeah, baby. That’s what’s up.
Another week, another new feature! This time we’re starting the “Next Big Thing” - pretty self explanatory. This week is about Paola Hernandez, a 25-year-old Mexican fashion phenom with cool style who says “I want to set a trend not only about looks, but about a conscious lifestyle.” And last week was the start of the new feature, “Trend I Hate”, and this week we’re hating on fringed accessories. Unless maybe you’re a cowgirl. Then maybe. Plus, five golden rules of jean shopping - I know you’ve bought jeans that were too tight for you thinking, “hey...they’ll stretch”. All this and more made this the best week on Stylehive since last week! Get the scoop while it’s hot. Bzz bzz.

Last week I had the honor of attending the brilliant graduation fashion show of San Francisco’s Academy of Art, which honored Ralph Rucci and James Galanos. When I attended last year (we interviewed Zac Posen!), I was pleasantly surprised at the level of talent, artistry, and professionalism the students demonstrated. Needless to say, I was ready for some action this year. A student fashion show is one in which the designers can be more experimental, and inspirations ranged from claustrophobia and chaos to fairy tales and Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni (Google it!). See the SLIDESHOW for my favorite picks and fall 2008 trends (no plaid!).
Who needs seaweed, primrose oil, or different kind of fruits when you can have feces on your face! New York Magazine recently came out with an article introducing the “Geisha Facial” available at Shizuka New York, a high-end Japanese spa in New York. This special facial uses all natural ingredients in addition to the “uguisu no fun” (sterilized nightingale droppings), which back in the day, 18th century geishas and kabuki actors used to clean heavy white makeup off their faces. In the modern day, Shizuka’s poop apparently “makes the porcelain beauty of this Japanese icon accessible to the everyday person.” At $180 for a 50-minute treatment, all I gotta say is “Holy crap!”
What started out as a whim turned into a career for jewelry designer Michele Scholnick. While in graduate school, Michele took some art classes for fun and within a mere two weeks, she was hooked. As a child, Michele’s mother would use bare branches on the way to school to explain the concept of negative space. And now, Michele’s branches have been seen in Life and Style, WWD, In Style, and Lucky. Last week, we premiered our Next Big Thing feature with Paola Hernandez, and today we’re excited to have Michelle as our next, Next Big Thing. “I’m really flattered! And a bit relieved,” Michelle tells Stylehive. “I still have days where I wonder if anyone other than my mother is going to like my work!” Click READ MORE for our interview with Michele, and SEE SLIDESHOW for her modern, organic pieces.
