Last year we featured Cassie Kogler‘s journey from freak to fashion phenom. Since then, she and her flamboyantly fresh line New York Couture have caught fire. Fit for a punk princess, each of Cassie’s one-of-a-kind pieces are hand cut, sewn, and detailed. New York Couture is now sold in over 20 boutiques in Canada, Japan, Panama, and the states (including Patricia Field‘s boutique in NYC). Cassie isn’t surprised she’s Stylehive’s Next Big Thing. “I used to tell people in high school that I was going to be famous. I didn’t know for what...I guess I know now

Ever wonder what the stars really think about fashion week? Check out our video partner SpinDaily‘s latest video and you’ll hear what Jenna Jameson, Hills star Whitney Port, and Lily Collins (daughter of Phil Collins) have to say about the LA Fashion Week scene as it compares to New York’s week of chic. Can the two even be compared? Just what is the “head nod thing?” How about the “woooo factor?” Find out these answers and more by clicking SEE VIDEO and catch SpinDaily’s fun celeb-filled scoop!
When a pre-bump Jessica Alba, a post-twins JLo, and a no-bump Mena Suvari need the perfect bikini to wear out on the paparazzi-infested beaches of the world, they often look no further than their latest Ashley Paige one or two piece. But there’s one celebrity who Ms. Paige never expects to don her comfy/sexy swimwear. (Think: “The one who wears cone bras.") At least that’s what Ms. Paige told me during our wide-ranging - and educational (for a guy) - interview before her Fall 2008 swimsuit show at L.A. Fashion Week. Check out the rest of my interview and her sexy new line for Spring inspirations.
You probably know O’Neal McKnight because you have rocked out to his song “Check Your Coat” at the club or have seen the video on VH1 or MTV. What you probably didn’t know is when you look at Diddy, Russell Simmons, or Usher and say, “Damn, that man has style,” it’s likely because O’Neal McKnight made them so. Wardrobe stylist for so many events, videos, and mega-stars that I don’t have enough space to list them, O’Neal has now transformed himself into the ultimate hybrid of music and fashion. Stepping out into the limelight, he told me what it’s like to live in within the community of superstardom. Oh, and by the way, the kid can dance. Really, really dance. Click READ MORE to hear about his many moves, and click SEE VIDEO to see them for yourself!
The highlight of LA Fashion Week for me was talking to the event host, Smashbox Studios owner Davis Factor, about his company’s green initiative, and seeing the amazing lineup of green designers Factor and the gang put together for the week’s big green runway show. Check out our latest Stylehive TV video, where I talk to Factor and actress Amy Smart about the importance of fashion going green, and see the latest green designs taking over Hollywood.
My prefered sex and relationships advice site (and friend of Stylehive) thefrisky.com is putting aside their usual witty snark and focusing on doing good this week. Check out their important instructional video from editor-at-large Simcha as she goes shopping for D-Cups, and click to the site for an online discount from Bra Smyth. Because bra knowledge is bra power.
Jennifer Egan is Gen Art‘s Los Angeles uber talent scout. She put together the indie design powerhouse‘s New Garde show last month, featuring three amazingly talented, up-and-coming designers: Jess Kamm, JMary, and Les Sang Des Betes’ Trang Chau. Eschewing the runway in favor of three still life tableaux Jen termed “dynamic installations,” the event was equal parts fashion show, and, given the designers’ avant garde leanings, performance art opening. Click WATCH VIDEO for the funky scene, and find out why Jen picked these three designers over everyone else in LA!
Tarina Tarantino is on a serious roll. Every celebrity’s favorite Gothy accessories girl just opened new boutiques in Milan and New York City, and now she’s about to take over the Barbie aisle of your local Toys R Us! We caught up with Tarina at the Jared Gold runway show in Los Angeles and got the scoop on her plans for style world domination, which also includes a big move to a big new creative HQ out in La La land. Click WATCH VIDEO for my front row interview with the TT-ster!
I was in Los Angeles for the Jared Gold fashion show when who should I bump into (okay I stalked them) but Sweet P and Kit of Project Runway fame. A year ago, they were slogging through their anonymous lives like the rest of us, but now they’re front row on the runways, hamming it up with pushy interviewers, and Sweet P told me she’s even getting her own show! Watch my exclusive interview for sexy details on what will undoubtedly be Bravo‘s next big fashion reality megahit. (I’m thinking bigger than Workout, but maybe not quite Top Chef. That Padma‘s hard to turn off.)
In case you haven’t heard, bright colors are clubbing grays and blacks and browns over the head this year and retaking their rightful spots on top of the fashion food chain. Nowhere is that more apparent than in Indian designers Falguni & Shane Peacock‘s Fall 2008 line, which they debuted in the U.S. for the first time at L.A. Fashion Week. I talked with the husband and wife team before their historic show about their use of color, and why their line, synonymous with Bali movie starlets, may soon be draped over the bodies of their American cousins. Click WATCH VIDEO for our backstage chat.
Hair care megadude Jonathan Antin has two speeds - caffeine and guarine. The creator of the Jonathan product line, star of Blowout, and little brother of Pussycat Dolls creator Robin Antin, was his trademark maniacally intense self backstage at the Dolls’ runway show for L.A. Fashion Week. Antin took me through some of the models’ styles for the show, then turned the tables and interviewed me on his creations! Watch as I struggle to parry his witty jabs. (If 60 Minutes has an opening, Antin should be on their short list.)
I did a bunch of celebrity and designer interviews at L.A. Fashion Week last week, including two at the Whitley Kros show on Day One. I already ran the Danny Masterson and Giovanni Ribisi interview and wanted to put a little breathing room between them and my other fave chat from that night, Juliette Lewis. Juliette told me she loved Whitley Kros (designed by two of her best buds Marissa Ribisi and Sophia Banks), because “its casual and elegant at the same time,” but couldn’t see wearing them with her band The Licks. “On stage I need something a little more rough around the edges so I can tumble and ... cavort,” she explained. Watch the video to see us cavort through the rest of our red carpet interview now!
L.A. Fashion Week was a procession of pretty people and interesting conversations, but if I had to pick THE highlight of the week, it was probably chatting with pretty interesting Mena Suvari in Smashbox Studios’ VIP room. I just happened to be in there filming segment about the VIP room itself when Mena glided in to hang out before the Jenny Han show. (All of the American Express cardholders got to hang back there all week with the designers and celebs, so one flash of my “Member Since 1997,” and I was in.) What followed was a wide-ranging conversation on accessories, Spring colors, and head shapes. Yes, head shapes.
Have you heard of Single After Eight? No, it isn’t the latest in the string of online dating services, but now that we have your attention, you’ll be pleased to learn that it’s a new line of pretty dresses designed by SINGLE’s Galina Sobolev and Project Runway’s Andraé Gonzalo. Rather than reinventing the classic cocktail dress, the line is based on the 1950s dress style, an era where fit, detail, and versatility were key elements. Their primary focus is on quality fabrics, especially lace, and handmade details like rosettes made up of multiple fabrics for the kind of special touch that makes the woman inside the dress feel just as exquisite as the dress itself. Check out the video below for a behind-the-scenes look at the new line!
1940s pin-up girl Betty Page just got a 2008 makeover, courtesy of Jenna Jameson and PETA. The former porn star and the anti-animal cruelty lobby have teamed up for a steamy new campaign called “Pleather Yourself,” (get it?!) which urges fashion slaves to give up their leather addiction in favor of its man-made substitute! Jenna assumes Betty Page’s iconic pose for the new PETA ads, dressed only in a pleather bikini. So is a pleather clothing line in the offing for Ms. Jameson? Find out in my fun L.A. Fashion Week interview with the charming, eco-conscious star.
