I enjoy a good crafting afternoon as much if not more than the next girl. But some projects I start often end up unfinished because I’m following instructions by some kind of wunderkid designer that thinks sewing an evening gown is easy. These kinds of projects then leave me feeling thoroughly defeated and uncreative. That was until I discovered the blog P.S.- I Made This, a DIY blog run by New York City-based lifestyle, design, and style expert Erica Domesek. Driven by her mantras “re-imagine, re-use, and re-invent” and “I see it, I like it, I make it,” she reinterprets trends in an easy and inventive way. Nothing she makes looks like it comes from a second-rate craft fair, yet her steps are simple and doable for any craft-savvy mortal. She starts with a simple inspiration collage right from your most current magazines and fashion shows and then has visual instructions that take you through the construction. Some of my favorites pull right from the fall runways-- her take on the lace bow headband, faux fur vest and embellished shoulder pads are as easy as pie to make, but look super stylish. Lady Gaga is on the cover of the January issue of ELLE looking staggeringly normal- a quality we’d never thought we’d attribute to the songstress. Of course, “normal” in her case also happens to be quite pretty, which isn’t always the first thing you notice when you take into account her affinity for outrageous, scene-stealing costumes and heavy makeup. In the issue she opens up about recurring themes in her work, saying “I feel that if I can show my demise artistically to the public, I can somehow cure my own legend. I can show you so you’re not looking for it. I’m dying for you on domestic television-- here’s what it looks like, so no one has to wonder.” Somehow I’m convinced we’ll always wonder about Lady Gaga even with this new insight, especially if you consider that seeing a pared down version her is about as rare as seeing her don pants, but it’s definitely intriguing to see a new side of the enigmatic artist.

Living so close to Silicon Valley, it’s no wonder that all my best guy friends have some varying degree of nerdiness. And just so you know, the rumors about nerds being socially awkward are totally untrue. (For the most part, anyway!) I really love the holidays. All the stores are playing my favorite Christmas songs, coffee shops have special holiday themed drinks, and the overall sentiment of goodwill and cheer is as infectious as H1N1. Yes, I do a little bit of baking. I’ll even cook at times if I need to. While I’m not claiming to be a domestic goddess by any means, I can at least look the part while preparing for upcoming holiday parties. Recently I made a fantastic purchase in hopes of it inspiring me to become an overnight chef success. Anthropologie’s 3-D Toile Full Apron is a pretty sweet deal! It’s not your grandmother’s “kitchenwear” either. The apron I bought has gorgeous ruffles and ruching; I found myself not wanting to take it off when I was done baking. I wore it this past Thanksgiving, while I whipped up my pumpkin gingerbread trifle. My dessert was a hit, but that didn’t mean I came out of the kitchen unharmed. Thank god the apron was machine washable! Holiday cookie time is upon us, and I plan on wearing it to protect my clothing. The apron is so cute; I swear it makes me want to find another excuse to wear it. Maybe I’ll attempt a roast… with the number of a good take-out places within my reach!
