At this year’s CFDA Fashion Awards, the beautiful Blake Lively made a show-stopping splash wearing a hot pink strapless dress by Michael Kors. Given the bright hue of the dress, Blake kept the rest of her ensemble on the subtle side with a pair of nude Christian Louboutin pumps, and some stunning jewelry pieces from Lorraine Schwartz including blackened gold and diamond hoops, a black jade and diamond ring and a blackened gold diamond mesh ring. Hot pink was without a doubt the shade du jour on the Spring 2009 runways, as seen at Badgley Mischka, Matthew Williamson, Doo. ri, Christian Dior, and many more, and the neon-color trend will be even more potent with the eighties revival on the horizon for Fall. Blake’s strapless style is both fashion-forward and classically chic, definitely perfect for summer soirees! Check out my SLIDESHOW for 5 styles similar to the one she sported.
Nicole Smith is an editor at CraftStylish, a site dedicated to original do-it-yourself projects for home, fashion, wedding, and more. Below she shares how to sew your own bib necklace… and in turn, save yourself from a thousand-dollar debt at Neiman Marcus!
While looking at the inspirational catalog from Neiman Marcus today, I came across this necklace by Ranjana Khan. The necklace retails for $1,200, and is very similar to this project I made for less than $20, which I call the “Bijoux Necklace.” My original inspiration for this project was a necklace by Burberry from their Fall ‘08 collections. Chunky jewels have been a runway staple the past few seasons, embellishing everything from shoes and headbands to hemlines and jewelry. Get the look quickly with organza (don’t worry; it’s easy to sew) and faux jewels. A ribbon makes the necklace adjustable for a chocker length or longer. You can also enlarge or reduce the size of the template to any dimensions you like. You’ll need: 1/4 yard of organza, 3/4 yard of 5/8-inch-wide velvet ribbon, assorted sew-on jewels, scissors, a sewing machine, a hand-sewing needle, and thread. Get the full step-by-step instructions, along with the pattern’s template, on CraftStylish!
When your husband has an alter ego as uber-fabulous as Bruno, you better be spotted wearing only fashion design’s elite from your head to your feet! As a result, Isla Fisher is rarely caught looking less than cute, even when she’s keeping it super-casual on an outing with daughter Olive. While I’m sure Isla’s version of “bumming it” on a sunny afternoon stroll is hardly bargain-friendly, you can snag her summery embellished sandals without having to sell off any of your appendages. MySpringShoes.com sells an indistinguishable strappy pair for just $39.99, which is more than affordable considering their versatility! They’re both casual and comfy yet still dressy enough to wear out with their beaded and bejeweled straps and metallic detailing. If only I had known about this steal before I splurged on the style’s more costly twins by Steve Madden!
Price: $39.99

Get inspired for fun and frivolity with sparkly sequin skirts. These ‘sparklers’ are not just for Independence Day! Add a new dimension to your wardrobe with the continuing metallic trend. Sequined skirts look best when paired with a solid colored blouse or tank. Two standout styles we love are this light yellow “Lemoncello" skirt from Robert Rodriguez (bottom right) and Proenza Schouler’s swing skirt version in black (top right). Pair your sequined skirt with a pretty solid color sleeveless blouse and statement making chunky woven platforms.

Whenever I travel, I’m either looking for a simple and cheap place to sleep for a night or an all out luxurious experience in a beautiful suite. Rough Luxe in London can be described as somewhere in the middle. Located in the up-and-coming King’s Cross, Rough Luxe calls themselves as “A little bit of luxury in a rough part of London. A little bit of rough in a luxurious London.” and they couldn’t have said it better. The small and intimate hotel may only have 9 rooms (and just 3 have private bathrooms) and the chipped paint and stripped walls may seem a little dingy, but it certainly adds to the artsy starving artist vibe. Looks aside, the service makes up for everything. The manager Leo and his dog Spud make their guests feel right at home with dinner recommendations, a tour of their gallery and evening drinks with other guests. So if you’re looking for something in between a student hostel and the Four Seasons, consider staying at the Rough Luxe Hotel the next time you’re in London. Take a peek at my slideshow to see more!
Summer weddings are beautiful, with the blue skies, lush greens and thriving flowers. The outdoors are alive-- what a perfect setting to dedicate yourself to your life-long love! Embrace the season and play up summer’s zest with a beauty regimen that will put you in steep competition with the ravishing landscape. There are, however, some things to caution with such a fruitful time of year, like the heat that can turn a bride from stunning to sweltering. Oil-free foundations are a must, as are formulas that are light and airy to let your pores breathe. However, sometimes light and airy is synonymous with flaky, non-lasting makeup, so you’ll need some of these dependable picks to last you on your ceremony of a lifetime. In the heat of the moment, you’ll need a moisturizer first to start off fresh (oil-free of course), followed by a primer to make everything stay all day. A summer wedding is code for flawless skin, so you’ll want to play up your skin tone with the some sunshine accents. More importantly, you’ll want to brighten up without upstaging your skin with too much color splashing other areas of your face. While you’ll want shimmer and bronzer to brighten your base, you won’t want to get too bold with autumnal plums or merry reds sprinkled on your eyes and lips. For your eyes, soft summer colors will certainly be staple items in your makeup bag: you’ll use those to match your wedding theme’s color composition. Don’t let the lips overdo the statement your skin is making either by choosing a natural, more matte look that will make your lips a kissably-soft surprise for the leading man. Any color like Stila’s Long Wear Lip Color in Darling (Golden Champagne) would be a perfect fit. If you must be bold with color, choose a nail color with some botanical bite. When it’s all said and done, the beauty picks in this slideshow will make you an amazing summer queen!
If your understanding of the inner-workings of the fashion magazine industry is loosely based on repeated viewings of The Devil Wears Prada, get thee to a theater this fall when long-awaited documentary “The September Issue” is finally released. Directed by R.J. Cutler, the film showcases Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour in a light that few people aside from her tight-knit circle of friends and editors have or will ever see her. Behind Wintour’s sunglasses and iconic bob haircut is a woman whose taste, opinion, and foresight determines the course of American fashion and the place it holds within the industry worldwide. Designers create collections for all sorts of reasons, above all to impress her-- it’s no wonder she’s garnered a reputation as someone to be feared. Though tense and demanding on many levels, the film is simultaneously refreshing and entertaining, and truly a rare glimpse into a world that we think we know so much about. The cameras take us through meetings, fashion weeks, and photo shoots so we can gain more understanding of the immense effort that goes into creating the magazine’s most important issue. Aware of how she is perceived by those outside of her immediate circle, Wintour remains graceful and unapologetic-- after all, it is her job. The film stars Wintour alongside Grace Coddington, Andre Leon Talley, Patrick Demarchelier and Oscar De La Renta, and will be released on August 28th in NYC and on September 11th nationwide. Flip, flop, flip, flop. It’s hard not to hear that summer’s here! You know the sound — the one that classifies an entire genre of footwear simply by the sound they make as you skip down the street. Since the middle of the last century, the fun thong sandals have made their mark as summer’s top shoe choice. Famous for beating the heat, a pair of these make sun and sweat a breeze on those record-breaking hot days. Most important, however, is the signature impact they’ve had on swim-season fashion. If you’re not barefoot on the beach, a pair of flip flops aren’t too far out of sight, so matching your beachwear ensemble is top priority in picking your sand-safe kicks. They’re the most basic of footwear, yet the most essential, as they’re easy to throw on to get the job done, and with the right pair, you won’t have to sacrifice comfort or sleek style. They’re also lightweight and great for travel, so a pair that works for both a day at the beach and a night on the town is essential. To make them stand out from the Y straps of yesteryear, sling on a pair that boasts a little more edge for a flip that will make others flop! Here’s a slideshow with some stylish picks to kick off this season’s sound of summer.

Are bowties ready for a comeback? I sure hope so! No longer reserved for nerds at prom and Bill Nye the Science Guy, bowties have started popping up here and there. But are they prime for a big return or will it just be a flash-in-the-pan trend like the brief resurgence of men’s short shorts? From hipster to hip-hop and all the way uptown to"Gossip Girl” territory, there’s no denying that the trend is starting to build. Karl Lagerfeld has been spotted wearing a simple black silk bowtie for some time and Kanye West is rocking them in his sneak peak at his new clothing line Pastelle. Forgotten by fashion and relegated to dweeb territory for years, today’s bowtie has a nostalgic kitschy feel that’s fresh and new. Ready to jump on this trend? Check out the slideshow for some favorites. Not sure how to even tie a bowtie? Click “See Video” to watch Avvi66’s YouTube video, “How to Tie a Bowtie” for a step-by-step how-to.

On NBC Nightly News last week, I caught a story about 27-year-old UK entrepreneur Matt Horan who started a company based off an ingenious idea. Rollasole is an emergency ballet flat sold in vending machine at UK clubs. For about 5 pounds (around 8 bucks), you can relieve your dancing or partying feet with these comfy and cute ballet flats that roll open and come complete with a little carry pouch (for you to tote around and use later!). Within 6 months of starting his business, Horan has sold thousands of Rollasoles and has expanded to the wedding/special occasions market. The next expansion? Over the pond, of course. Rollasole is coming soon to the U.S. to bring relief to our stiletto-wearing partying feet. Read more on Rollasole at the London Evening Standard and Perez Hilton, and even follow them on Twitter—@Rollasole. Check out more fun fashion finds at Coquette!

Finding cute workout clothes can be a challenge, especially when you don’t want to shell out for those designer Stella McCreditcardmaxout lines. New from the Gap Group: Athleta, a line of workout clothing for women that’s affordable and attractive. We’re not going to say the styles are to-die-for, but it’s worth checking out. You can shop by sport, which doesn’t just include your basic yogawear and running gear, but also covers ski/snowboarding, golf, and hiking. In the mix you’ll find bra-tanks in punchy colors, skirt-capris, patterned performance swimsuits that are the anti-Speedo, and nylon tennis dresses. There are some crazy prints that vary from loud graphic flowers to hippie mendi designs that you may want to be cautious about wearing. At least you can say they’re not boring!
