Dressing For Your Body: Layers For Thick Waisted Gals

Fashion · StyleAdvice

image

The layered look is a godsend for ladies like myself and Lindsay Lohan with long thin legs and thick, undefined waists. Sure, there are plenty of tips and tricks to create the illusion of a defined waist- some of which we’ve already covered, and more which we will be covering- but sometimes, notably on days when your mid-section is especially pronounced, the best solution for looking and feeling great is to layer it up. Lindsay is the master of the layers and manages to keep the look chic and sexy by not going too layer-happy and carefully selecting items that will complement her figure.

The number one rule here is to make sure the tops you select aren’t too tight- this will just emphasize a larger mid section, and not too loose- an especially big no no if you’re wearing skinny pants because this can create a Humpty Dumpty silhouette- so not sexy.

Here are some more tips to help you work it the right way:

image Try the layered look with slim pants- either leggings (Lindsay’s go-to choice), or skinny jeans. Black skinny jeans are super sexy and do wonders when it comes to emphasizing long gams- especially when paired with black pumps.
Hot Find: Superfine Jett Straight Leg Jeans, $262
image Keep the layers sleek and tailored up top. A cropped jacket or blazer is an ultra-chic way to finish off the layered look.
Hot Find: L.A.M.B Rebel Jacket, $365
image Create the illusion of a more narrow top-half by selecting an item in a v-shape (a cami, tee-shirt, thin sweater, cardigan, blazer, and so on) and then layering on top or underneath it.
Hot Find: Anna Sui Swirly Soutache Tank, $77
image Nothing conceals a tummy better than an empire waist. An empire blouse or tunic with a band falling just below the bust creates a flattering shape and the loose flowing fabric beneath gives you extra breathing room. Be sure the opt for tops that gently skim the body and aren’t too tight or too loose.
Hot Find: Jill Stuart Hayley Camisole, $225

Comments on this post

Interesting article!  I’m slender with skinny legs and a boyish figure with an undefined waist.  I think there’s only a 5” or 6” difference between my waist and hip measurements!  (Most clothing size charts I’ve seen assume you have a 10” difference!)

Most of these tips are great—fitted jackets are wonderful for defining a waist, and v-neck tops with a cami underneath are my daily uniform!  (V-neck T’s in the summer and sweaters in the winter!)

Not so sure about the empire waist though.  I have yet to find an empire-waist shirt that does not make me look pregnant!  All the empire-waist and trapeze tops I’ve tried on just add bulk to my midsection, make my waist look larger, make my small chest look even smaller, and basically just hide what little curves I have!  Fitted (but not skin-tight), waist-defining styles are definitely my best bet!
