Expert Makeup Tip: The Right Way to Use Concealers

Beauty · StyleAdvice

image

Makeup artists can seriously be magicians sometimes. They just whip out their bag of tricks, throw a bunch of stuff together, and all of a sudden you look like the most fabulous version of yourself. Have you ever tried to follow them step by step? It’s almost impossible! Fortunately, I am now in the position where I get to meet the magicians themselves, and luckily for us, they’re nicer than the real magicians and are more than willing to share their secrets.

One of the most troubling to me is how makeup artists always manage to hide the most hideous of under eye circles and blemishes, yet when I give it a try, and another try, and dab, smear, smudge layer upon layer of concealer on, I get nowhere!

To combat my lack of cover-up skills, I solicited the help of Beauty.com makeup artist Tina Turnbow

According to Tina, the best ways to apply concealer are either with your finger or a firm pointed brush, and you should simply tap it on, not smear. “Under the eye area you can go a little lighter with the shade,” she adds. “But not with blemishes, because then they’ll stick out more.”

Here are Tina’s Top 4 picks, guaranteed to keep you covered!

That’s backstage at the Lela Rose show, with our model, Candice!  Tina Turnbow is the best!

I’ve been using the TimeBomb concealer for years...your blog is the first place I’ve actually read about it though.  It’s the best!

I’m still trying to decide what is the best way to go--I started looking into mineral makeup also--have any suggestions?

Actually I love the Bare Essentials line, but more for their mineral foundation, not concealers.  They’re great because based on how you layer them, you can either get light or heavy coverage depending on what you’re looking for.

the balm is amazing!!!  doesn’t cake and it’s moisturizing too! so it’s also good for the eye area, but that doesn’t compromise the coverage- which is awesome!  and it comes in many shades so you can always find a color that matches properly.  May i also add that in 2nd place for under eye circles is laura mercier secret concealer.  they are both excellent but i like the balm a lil better for its better color range, and slightly lighter consistency.  Amazing cosmetics concealer covered a black eye for me where the balm couldn’t, but it was a slightly dryer consistency in comparison, so i wouldn’t put it on everyday unless i use a really moisturizing eye cream.  i tried everything in sephora and these were actually the best!!

the Balm is the best and i also didn’t need to put powder over it and it lasted all day and didn’t look heavy due to the formula and not having to use a powder to set it.  it’s so good.

mary kay concealer is a great cover up for age spots

MAC concealer its the best!!!.. atleast for me...it makes my under eye circles disappear...like magic...lol....Why didn’t i know about them sooner??

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I think I am going to try several and see how they work. I just love new makeup.smile
