Want to create a living space that’s better for your health and the environment, but not ready for major upgrades or remodels? Here are four simple ways you can turn your home green without breaking the bank.

Furniture: Whenever possible, buy furniture made of reclaimed materials (such as wood salvaged from torn-down buildings) or look for pieces made with sustainable materials like bamboo, a fast-growing, renewable resource. Better yet, hunt for hot, vintage items on eBay and in specialty resale shops.

Paint: Look for non-toxic or “no or low” VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paint such as Anna Sova’s Luxury Organics paints made with 99% food grade ingredients.

Cleaning Products & Household Goods: Shockingly, cleaning products are often the most toxic substances you can allow into your home. Instead, switch to non-toxic household cleaners (Oprah loves Shaklee!). While you’re at it, start shopping for paper towels, toilet paper, and trash bags made of recycled materials like those sold by Seventh Generation.
