In the world of modern-tinged, affordable home decor, there are two heavyweights on the scene. In one corner, West Elm, whose nature-inspired, bold-shape line has become ubiquitous in one-bedroom apartments across the land. In the other, CB2, which features brighter colors and retro patterns on its collection. I’m going to be asking questions about these two stores all week, so let’s start with the biggie.

Just stopped in a West Elm store yesterday. Although their furniture has a slight design edge over CB2, the quality of the manufacture is shoddy, at best. I truly felt sorry for the people walking out of there with stuff thinking that their new furniture was going to hold up better than IKEA.
