Actress Milla Jovovich and model Carmen Hawk are celebrating the five-year anniversary of their Jovovich-Hawk label with their strongest line to date. The best friends started their fledgling line in LA in 2003 on a whim, and have never looked back. Milla and Carmen tell Stylehive that the “need for reinvention, friends, people on thestreet, and film” keep the duo inspired.
And it seems to be working! Vogue remarks that Jovovich-Hawk’s line has a “girl-about-town cult status most designers spend years trying to achieve.” Indeed Jovovich-Hawk has become a staple of fashion editors and celebrities worldwide, as well as with women who simply love great clothes that are comfortable and easy to wear.
2007 is definitely turning into a big year for Milla in particular. Not only is her label thriving, she’s starring in Resident Evil:Extinction, out September 21, and she just announced she and her fiance, writer-and-director Paul Anderson, are pregnant with their first child! Congrats!
Stylehive talked to the multi-tasking Milla and Carmen about their line, being best friends, and what’s up next for Jovovich-Hawk.
Stylehive: You came to fashion design with an eye for style, but no real technical expertise. What was it like putting together your first line?
Jovovich-Hawk: We always loved each other’s style and decided to just start making clothing together! We made eight pieces that a friend of ours took to Fred Segal and they bought them, so our first line went out into stores almost accidentally! From there we just kept working at it and learning as we went along.
SH: Can you describe your style?
JH: We make wearable individual pieces that are feminine and strong in personality.
SH: What’s it like to work with your best friend?
JH: We respect our differences and use them to benefit the originality of the look we are creating. We also support one another to follow through with our visions and look at our line as a whole made from the collaboration of two individuals.
SH: Where’s your favorite place to shop?
JH: We’re a big thrift shoppers - and flea market shoppers!
SH: What kind of advice would you give to young girls dreaming of becoming fashion designers?
JH: Do what you most like and makes you the most happy. That’s usually what you will be best at.
SH: What’s next for Jovovich-Hawk?
JH: We’ve added lots more accessories from beaded bags & belts. And we’re also adding a holiday line and a resort line.
SH: Can’t wait to see the new stuff. Thanks!

I adore many pieces from the current collection and so many from past collections. The way vintage looks are updated with a modern edge (and vice versa) is unique and just cool!
I’m so happy to hear Milla’s pregnant! She’s so cool - what a lucky kid!
Milla always represented the image of a true lady for me. She’s not only perfect for the catwalk but she’s such a good actress as well. I’m glad to hear she’s building up a family and looking after her personal life.
Milla is my favorite actress and model ever! Just look at that face! I loved her in Resident Evil and can’t wait to see her in the next movie announced to have Mr. Anunt Imobiliar as a director. I hope she’ll be as glamorous as ever!
