Who wouldn’t want to regress back to childhood if it meant you got to have a swing in your house? Today’s I’m highlighting the best in swinging furniture. No tire swings involved, these swings are architectural, artistic, and modular. Take a trip back to the 1960’s with Kata’s outdoor chair, twirl on a round version from The Floating Bed Company, or be eco-friendly with The Hanging Chairs Collection from Raw Studio. Whether you care to swing outdoors or indoors, it’s here for you. Click over to the SLIDESHOW to find out how to get swinging.
Hate to commit but love having them around to look at? Need a change, full-knowing that you will need another one in a couple months? Everyone loves wall decor when you are in the ‘honeymoon phase’, but what to do when it gets too old? Live without the white wall monogamy! Now, with innovative wallpaper appliqués you can create almost any type of interior design scenario you could possibly want with these sticky decor elements that go on as easily as they come off. Find them for walls, doors, windows, ceilings, furniture, mirrors, and even for your bathtub to transform any flat surface into a work of art that is perpetually ‘in progress.’ The possibilities are endless and your skylight’s the limit! For apartment relationship advice, stop by the SLIDESHOW to see the art, functionality, and practicality without the ultimatum.
When decorating your home it is crucial to decide: are you a nostalgic or a forward thinker? Are you more prone to sift through flea markets for your homey treasures or visit the MOMA store? Chances are, like me, you don’t really want to define yourself by either extreme. However with an empty apartment waiting to be turned into a home, I have to commit to some sort of style, and I want your advice on which direction to lean. Is hyper-conceptual modernism really the future, or is the cozy feeling of updated classics the way to swing? I present you with two options: this opulent, Marie Antoinette style chair, or this concept from Dedon Furniture.
I was pretty surprised to read that paisley had made its way back into all that is trendy and good-- after all, wasn’t it just yesterday that the swirly print was relegated to men’s ties and upholstery? I guess some things do change because paisley has finally gotten up off the couch, dusted off the dull colors, and made a pretty cute comeback onto dresses, swimsuits, and even bangle bracelets! I’d imagine the print would be perfect for scarves and headbands as well, especially if you’re unsure about rocking it head to toe, but if you want to go all out, we suggest Matthew Williamson’s bold number-- though our slideshow is full of more affordable ways to get the look if shelling out two months’ rent on a trend that could be over before then just isn’t your thing.
Whether you’re newly single or just looking to spruce things up around the homestead, now is a great time to embrace your feminine side with bachelorette-friendly decor. Decorating is easy when you don’t have to worry about whether or not he would approve - just fill your space with whatever you please! For me it would a mix of old Hollywood, art deco and a little pop art. I love glamorous chandeliers that make a room sparkle and draw the eyes up, as well as sheepskin rugs that are soft enough to lounge on. My room would definitely include some art deco-inspired mirrored furnishings, as well as some punchy pop art pillows. It was fun looking through the Hive for all of my bachelorette pad necessities - you should try it too! And also be sure to check out my slideshow to see what I found to make my apartment go from barren to bachelorette pad-chic!
Every week Stylehive brings you five of the week’s top home decor deals, because as much as we all love a great steal on a new top or a pair of shoes, it’s nice to tend to a room that isn’t your closet from time to time. I suppose you could tend to both at the same time if you’re a talented multi-tasking shopper like someone I happen to know quite well, but that’s a matter of personal preference. Anyway, this week’s picks are extra special as we’ve included a few must-haves from Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale - but you’ll have to see them to believe them, so hurry and click on the slideshow! Deals like these won’t last long.
Confession: I take being indecisive to new levels. So when it comes to decorating my room-- an ongoing process, given what I just mentioned-- a mix of styles is key. I happen to love the streamlined look of modern decor, but in all honesty, it eventually bores me and I crave something with a touch more intrigue. Likewise, another part of me obsesses over intricately detailed pieces with a hint of enchantment, even a bit of baroque styling behind them-- but they can’t be too fussy. Did I mention I’m a little picky? Anyway, I channeled all of those fun little quirks into finding the perfect home accents, just the ones that balance the modern with the romantic for a result that’s simply charming. Come to think of it, they’re just like you know who. But I digress. Click on my SLIDESHOW and see how to add a little modern romance to your room!
City dwellers - New Yorkers, in particular - are remarkably adept at making even the tiniest of studio apartments look chic. With just the right balance of calm neutrals, surprising pops of color and perfectly sized pieces, a one-room flat can become a jewel box worthy of a four-page spread in any design mag. The key, of course, is finding furniture that fits the space and achieves that all-important blend of functionality and style. Some tips? A round table allows for lots of seating even in small spaces. Forget the bulky armchairs and look for slipper chairs that provide all the comfy upholstery without the heft of space-gobbling arms. And a sleek Parsons mini-desk can pull double duty as a hall console for keys and mail and a home for your laptop. For more small space pieces, check out my SLIDESHOW!
Sometimes people surprise you. Take designer Cole Scego. At first glance, his color-saturated work had me thinking he spends his days and nights in the most happening of urban locales. But no. Cole actually lives in the woods of rural Missouri with his wife and two Weimaraners. When asked if he feels at all isolated from city life, Cole maintains the bright lights just weren’t for him! Turns out, it’s not where you are but who you are and what you believe in that really matters. And Cole’s line of quirky, offbeat furniture reflects both his love of nature, and concern for the environment. Check out my slideshow of my favorite furniture and art from Cole Scego Design.
Apartment dwellers, rejoice! Gone are the days when a sofa bed meant yanking some ridiculously heavy bed frame out of the pits of an uncomfortable sofa - and good riddance. These days, far more user-friendly concepts like the day bed and futon are getting modern makeover from the likes of Design Within Reach, Urban Outfitters and even my fave place for inexpensive finds—World Market! These sleek pieces will give you extra seating and a comfy place for guests to rest their heads. Check out my slideshow for eight convertible sofa beds that’ll give your apartment smart 2-for-1 style!
So, you’ve finally taken the big step. Now its time to agree on how to decorate your new apartment - together. Of course, we all have different tastes - you like funky, while he loves modern. How about combining the two looks? We’ve found some really mod furniture and lighting that the guy in your life just may love. We found many of the designs on the European online shop DaWanda. Our favorite for summer has to be Monodesign’s Lightpipe. It is perfect for your rooftop oasis or as a decorative element on your patio. Click READ MORE for more lighting and furnishing ideas.
It’s the oldest story in the world: woman and man meet, fall in love, co-habitate, fight about furniture. Figuring out how to decorate an apartment in a way that will appeal to the sensibilities of both sexes is tricky, fight-inducing territory, to say the least. Still, with savvy shopping, achieving a gender-neutral look that doesn’t compromise style is possible. Figuring out which favorite colors you have in common is a great place to start. Then look for furniture with strong, clean lines: a stylish, gender-neutral look that can be accessorized as modern, bohemian, or retro as you (both) like! For pieces guaranteed to keep the peace, check out my SLIDESHOW!

Recently, we caught up with designer Daniel Moyer after BKLYN DESIGNS™ 2008. We asked him about the growth of the show, his recent work, and his thoughts on sustainable design. Daniel, a Brooklyn designer and fabricator of hardwood furniture, puts the fun in sustainable, eco-friendly designs. Not only does he carefully consider the choice of wood (think Black Locust) in his designs, he also uses the excess wood to make his FunkinFunction longboards. Click SEE SLIDESHOW for just a few of his whimsical designs and click READ MORE for our exclusive interview where we find out what he’s been up to!
In my search for a few super cool coffee tables I came across a similar variety known as the cocktail table. These pieces are like the coffee table’s trendier little sister, and their smaller size allows for more playful design. I love Giulio Cappellini’s spherical table - it’s modern yet soft and would contrast angular pieces beautifully. And no list would be complete without Karim Rashid’s ‘magino’ coffee table - the acrylic medium complements the design perfectly. You’ll find those two and many more in my slideshow of crazy cool coffee and cocktail tables, so gather ‘round and enjoy! I’m just left with one question: which one would look best holding my espresso martini?
Where else can you walk in empty-handed and then emerge with a three-drawer dresser and a package of heat-and-eat Swedish meatballs? Nowhere. Furniture from IKEA is like a pair of Levi’s.. everyone has one somewhere. But at the same time, their stuff can sometimes be like a logo-drenched handbag - virtually screaming IKEA, no matter what you pair it with in your home. But not ALL of their stuff! Click SEE SLIDESHOW for 10 IKEA pieces that don’t look like they fell off a Volvo.
We don’t need to tell you that lots of important stuff goes down in the bedroom. There’s the sleeping and dreaming… and, well, y’know, other good stuff too that follows, precedes, or sometimes interrupts the sleeping and dreaming. Why have a boring ol’ bed in such a momentous room? An over-the-top, fantasy bed will make you think you’re dreaming before you even fall asleep. From crazy four poster beds to round beds (Groovy baby!), we’ve got all of the Hive’s wackiest, wow-factor beds rounded up in this slide show!
An explosion of color is rocking the hive, and we can’t stop shaking with excitement over just how bright things are this spring! From a beautifully printed Missoni bikini to an ultra fun American Eagle colorblock skirt, it’s easy to see why we can’t pick just one shade, though we’ve thrown in a few monochromes as well. Also look out for the quirky and colorful ‘biscotti’ bag by Defunct baggage-- is it better for you than a Fendi baguette? Your wallet might think so! They’re all in our slideshow of today’s top ten finds, where we’ll tell you how much they cost and where you can buy them online!

I didn’t know it was possible for me to further my obsession with incredible modern furniture, but then along came Futil Design, the brainchild of Montreal-based designer Alexandre Berthiaume, and he’s literally given us something to flip over. His creations range from sofas made up of two primary pieces that are interchangeable and can be put together any which way to molded chairs that can be turned over to accommodate different seating styles, moods, or simply put, the desire to turn things around. Click SEE THE SLIDESHOW for 10 Futil Design pieces to flip over!
It’s safe to say that spring is definitely in the air! It’s also in our closets, all over our favorite tops, and now it’s moved on in to today’s top 10 finds! And when you’re ready to bring it inside, we’ve got a few lamps and a shelf that’ll bring a little spring to your room. But if we had to choose, our favorite pick is the orange chain handbag by Josep Font. Take a look at my SLIDESHOW to see why we’re craving it - and all of the other spring stuff - so much.
Today’s top ten hive finds are some of the quirkiest and most whimsical we’ve seen yet! Confession: I still have a Barbie Dream House. Actually that’s not true, and I haven’t had one since the elevator on my two-story one broke circa 1991. But I do have a dream house in the back of my mind, and it’s filled with furniture by Italian manufacturer Kartell. The Milan-based design house is known for its contemporary and above all practical focus. Each piece, from the simple ‘louis ghost’ chair to the playful ‘toobe’ floor lamp is the result of careful studies of the relationship between plastic and technology. Kartell’s collections also benefit from its international design base, where designers like Ron Arad, Piero Lissoni, Maarten Van Severen, and Philippe Starck keep the ever-expanding flow of ideas in constant motion. Click SEE SLIDESHOW for 10 pieces you’ll find in my Kartell dream house. (Sorry, Barbie.)
Looks like the print phenomenon has jumped from couture to furniture! I consider printed furniture the costume jewelry of the interior design world-- when kept to a minimum, the look is striking but not overkill. It goes without saying that these printed pieces are real scene stealers, so let them have the spotlight and let your other accents merely accent. From well-placed patterns to the most wayward and whimsical ones out there, I’ve found ten of the coolest printed pieces in the Hive from designers including Kartell, Marimekko, and Missoni. Watch the slideshow and tell me which one gets your vote!
Here comes the sun… finally! You know what else we’re ecstatic about? The return of COLOR. And it’s not just on our clothes! Check out the vibrant swivel chair that you can’t help but fall into, and a pretty little box that you’ll be happy to use to stash away all of your other pretty little things. You’ll also find draped dresses in super sweet shades from Valentino and Adam by Adam Lippes, and let’s not forget the yellow mini from spring favorite Tory Burch, a trend we know we’ll be seeing everywhere in the coming months! They’re all in our slideshow of today’s top ten hive finds, where we’ll tell you how much they cost and where you can buy them online.

There’s something about an antique-looking oak table that adds so much to a living room or bedroom. Thing is, they usually cost so much, which is no fun to find out after spending so long looking for that otherwise perfect piece! We’re loving the clean lines and delicate design on this sofa table from Warren Hile’s studio, but at around $1,800, it’s suddenly not so ideal. Lucky for us, Stylehive makes it easy to find great deals on furniture that’s just as unique. We’ve come up with five pieces with as much (if not more!) personality, and best of all, they each carry a price tag that’s well under $1,000. Check out the slideshow and see what we have in store, and tell us which is your favorite!

Home decor behemoths spend millions of dollars to find the sweet spot in the market, the perfect blend of cool, quality, sex, surprise, and novelty that makes people say to themselves “Wow, this is perfect. I’ve never seen this before. It’s so me. I’ll take 35 of them!” West Elm obviously did this, and they did it well, because the stores are sprouting like 50’s inspired ash-colored weeds all over the country! So tell us, at the end of the day....
Wow. Who knew the West Elm/CB2 questions we’ve been asking this week would reveal so much about what divides us? Stylehivers have been fighting like Eames and Saarinens over which moderately-priced modern furniture store rules, and which indeed drools. So let’s take a step back, and ask, no matter what your preference is, why you prefer it. And please leave some comments to further describe your love of either!

Pretty pretty patent heels and eclectic lighting make for one super shiny Friday, and we’re bringing you the best of each in our slideshow of today’s top ten finds! Fun furniture from the haute to the handmade have also found their way into the mix, along with a little red dress that’ll more than suffice if he forgets the flowers come February 14th… hey, it never hurts to plan ahead! Also look out for a chandelier in an unexpected shape, and a Lewis Cho top that’ll make it easy to shake off a certain habit known as sequins that we seemed to marinate in for all of 2007.
Everyone loves a cozy armchair or a comfy couch, but let’s be real: there are only so many ways to recline on a sofa or a chair. What if, instead of dictating how you lounge, your furniture responded to your body? This is precisely the goal of the Sitscape project, an exciting experiment in furniture design from Hackenbroich Architekten that aims to expand the dynamic relationship between people and their furniture.
Admit it! You were incredibly jealous of Cher’s virtual closet the first time you watched Clueless, and every time after that as well! I mean, what fashion-conscious girl wouldn’t want her entire wardrobe at her fingertips? To actually have to walk into the closet to get a top… as if! But alas, life is not this simple, and hangers do not revolve at the push of a button unless you’re at the dry cleaners. Factor in busy lifestyles and overdue laundry days and your closet can be anything but the happy place it was when you first introduced it to the Marc by Marc spring ‘06 collection.
The holidays always sound like they’ll be relaxing, but then reality sets in and we’re lucky if we have one moment to ourselves to sit back and escape from the crazy relatives and wine-induced caroling. So when we finally do find the time to sit back, it better be on something that feels just as wonderful as the time is precious. Basically, that old rocking chair isn’t going to cut it.
So if you’re ready to sink into some soft, squishy goodness, look no further than our slideshow of the most luxurious lounge chairs in the hive! From amorphous beanbags to more structured seating, these chairs will provide much needed refuge from the chaos of the holiday season. As for the unbearable caroling, well, these squishy chairs won’t stop it, but squishy earplugs will.
