One day back in 1959, a desperate housewife took a dozen colorful dresses made by her dressmaker and set them up for sale at an orange juice stand. From this simple beginning, a legend was born. Within five years, it seemed almost every American woman was sporting one of Lilly Pulitzer’s simple sheath dresses in an eye-popping print. Lilly became a favorite at resorts and country clubs nationwide and even Jacqueline Kennedy became a fan. And while the Lilly Pulitzer label continues to manufacture clothes today, the early vintage dresses and skirts of the 1960s and 1970s still hold a special charm. Sunny San Francisco days call for lazy mornings, leisurely walks, and long brunches, so when the weekend finally rolls around, head over to Foreign Cinema. Tucked away in SF’s lively Mission district, the restaurant is known for the foreign and independent films shown in the outdoor courtyard, during which guests can dine and drink to their hearts’, stomachs’, and minds’ content, though brunch is equally delectable. I wandered down to the “industrial-chic” establishment a few Saturday mornings ago to see for myself, and let’s just say my go-to brunch place across from my apartment has some serious, high-ceilinged and white tableclothed competition. Click SEE SLIDESHOW for a taste of Foreign Cinema, a true serving of San Francisco City Style!

I just bought some awesome sunglasses that I did not include in this slideshow. I didn’t want the entire universe running out and buying them. Forgive me. But I did include 10 other favorites! I’m especially partial to big shades that make you look like an alien and edgy shades that set you apart from the crowd. And it should go without saying that aqua Ray-Ban Wayfarers are friggin’ hot sauce. And because so many of us have the ability to lose our shades the minute a summer margarita hits our lips, there’s some affordable options in here as well. So get to clicking people!

Where else can you walk in empty-handed and then emerge with a three-drawer dresser and a package of heat-and-eat Swedish meatballs? Nowhere. Furniture from IKEA is like a pair of Levi’s.. everyone has one somewhere. But at the same time, their stuff can sometimes be like a logo-drenched handbag - virtually screaming IKEA, no matter what you pair it with in your home. But not ALL of their stuff! Click SEE SLIDESHOW for 10 IKEA pieces that don’t look like they fell off a Volvo.
Let me guess, this morning you rolled out of bed and threw on “whatever,” using the Monday excuse. Raise your hand if you’ve been using the same ordinary silver corkscrew/souvenir shop keychain bottle opener for longer than you can remember… ahh, I love being right. The barware you use is just as crucial, if not more crucial than the actual drinks themselves, so it’s definitely time to update these oh-so-necessary gadgets. I’ve come up with ten corkscrews and bottle openers that are reason enough to throw a party (like you really need an excuse), and you can bet these ones won’t get lost in that cluttered kitchen drawer. I’m not sure if it was the new prints that I received from artist Dayna Gedney - or a recent trip to the beach, but I am feeling the motion of the ocean all right these days. Living in Northern California means that the beach on a hot sunny day carries with it a 90% chance that you’ll develop hypothermia if you dare to put a toe in the water. Or is it just me? So, let’s get back on track! Ocean life and sea creatures - with that in mind, here’s some work from the best and brightest in the world of independent design.

The swimsuits I see popping up in department stores remind me of the tulips and crocuses rearing their heads in the garden. They’re reminders that the summer sun will soon be shining down in all its glory. But for many women, this explosion of color spells dread. After all, the last thing most women look forward to is the hunt for a new swimsuit. But fortunately, retro suits are all the rage this year. So why not give an authentic vintage version a chance? There are a variety of great vintage bathing suit styles available to suit any figure. And each decade offers its own special allure - from itsy bitsy bikinis to boy-cut wonders to classic 1940s glam. Just click SEE SLIDESHOW for some inspiration.

Are shorts up for debate? We think they may be, but even still, we think this summer wear can be quite cute, if you buy the right cut for your “body type” or whatever it is the women’s mags always tell you. This time around, we’ve picked out 10 pairs of shorts that are on the teeny side. But don’t you fear. If you don’t want to show that much gam, or you always have bruises on your thighs from walking into the corner of the bed in the middle of the night like we do, we’ll be doing other slideshows in the weeks ahead with all kinds of other cuts.

Every Mother’s Day is a special one, but for new moms, it’s full of meaning. And messes. And sleep deprivation. So instead of going all practical, get that new mom something a little more glamour and a little less Gerber. A luxe baby bag or a calming bath set are perfect ways to add to her special day, and you can bet she’ll be especially appreciative of anything void of a rubber ducky. Don’t be afraid to stick to the standbys, either-- movies, iPods, and cameras carry new meanings in the hands of new moms. Click SEE SLIDESHOW for our top 10 picks and presents for new moms this Mother’s Day.

It’s not often that we think of wallpaper as art, since it’s usually just the backdrop to the art, but Swedish designer Lisa Bengtsson is changing that with her collection of whimsical prints and patterns that are just too pretty to cover. Drawn to creativity and expression as a child, her background in advertising only added to her desire to work in graphic design. The inspiration for her work comes from people-- the way they live now, the way they used to live, and the behaviors and memories that make them who they are. It’s this sense of past and present combined that gives her work such a unique, imaginative flair. Click SEE SLIDESHOW to see Lisa Bengtsson’s whimsical wallpaper and graphic prints for yourself!
I just adore beaded sweaters and have acquired quite a collection through the years. You can wear them all the time - not just fancy occasions or evenings out. Try pairing one with jeans and flats for a casual yet pulled-together weekend look, or casually throw one over your shoulders to ward off the air conditioning chill at the office. And since the best vintage sweaters are made of cashmere or lambswool rather than acrylic, be sure to store your gem properly to keep those pesky moths at bay. If you’re not the type to purchase archival boxes, at the very least, protect your sweaters in a zippered pillow cover. Now click SEE SLIDESHOW for five fabulous vintage finds!
Luxe fabrics, quirky cut outs, and bright bursts of color in all the right places are making today’s top picks some of our favorite ones yet! You’ll also want to check out some eye-catching pieces from Anthropologie-- the colors make them much too pretty to overlook! And that’s not all-- we’re also showing you a little something Pour Toi. It looks like my list of reasons to to go Italy just got one longer. Milan’s 2008 Week of Design this last month featured the highly anticipated Corian® loves MISSONI exhibition, blending Corian’s top-notch design and architecture materials with Missoni’s expertly coordinated colors. The result? An awe-inspiring show of shapes and shades taking creativity in design to soaring new levels. With the multitude of spring and summer trends sweeping the fashion world at this very moment, it can actually be hard to stay polished and current all at once! Masters at achieving this look have found a few key looks that work well for them, and by sticking to those, they always manage to look like the very best version of themselves (rather than hopping on every trend train that passes by and ending up in Fashion Victimville). So in order to stay on the right trend track, we’re looking to classic, polished women’s sportswear retailer Ann Taylor for their picks for spring’s most coveted, and more importantly, most wearable looks. The verdict? Bright and bold colors give classic shift dresses and tees an updated twist, while patent trim wedge heels are perfect for chic and carefree dressing. Click SEE SLIDESHOW for our favorite looks from Ann Taylor and other retailers that’ll keep you looking trendy and stylish all spring and summer long!
We don’t need to tell you that lots of important stuff goes down in the bedroom. There’s the sleeping and dreaming… and, well, y’know, other good stuff too that follows, precedes, or sometimes interrupts the sleeping and dreaming. Why have a boring ol’ bed in such a momentous room? An over-the-top, fantasy bed will make you think you’re dreaming before you even fall asleep. From crazy four poster beds to round beds (Groovy baby!), we’ve got all of the Hive’s wackiest, wow-factor beds rounded up in this slide show!
Sweetly sexy is the style of the day, as chiffon and silk meet their match in gladiator heels and patent accessories. Looks like the two most similar trends, stripes and color block, have finally reached an agreement-- check out the looks from doo.ri and Nanette Lepore and you’ll agree too. And don’t miss the pretty Prada platforms-- they’re the sweetest way to put a little spring in your step! We wear dresses all year round, but the ones we put on during the winter just aren’t as fun as the ones made for warmer weather, when scratchy wool finally gives way to soft, flowy, and feminine materials. And, unlike winter dresses, which seem to be either made for work or made for after-work, the dresses out now can go from the office to a bar just by taking off the sweater you wear to stay warm in your frigid, air-conditioned office. Click SEE SLIDESHOW for my favorite warm-weather dresses for work and beyond!
From intricately detailed dresses to basics with just as much punch, and glitzy jewels to match, it’s no wonder why we can’t get enough of spring and summer’s coveted looks. Be sure to check out the bangles from Bendel’s that’ll add a pop of color to any outfit and the Chanel-esque earrings that can easily hold their own. And if you’re in the market for a new dress, a vacation, or both, cruise on over to the pretty pick from Plastic Island - it looks about as cool as it sounds. Balloon animals and cartoon characters are fun childhood memories for most, but for artist Jeff Koons, they are monuments! The Pennsylvania-born painter and sculptor’s larger than life sculptures are kitsch writ large. Koons’ latest show, “Jeff Koons on the Roof” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, which opened last week, is this year’s must-see exhibit in the Big Apple, and his public sculptures are permanent fixtures at the Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain and Papal Palace in Avignon, France. I was thrilled to tiny bits when Stylehive approached me to be a guest blogger. I spend a lot of time hiving independent design finds – but to included in the Stylehive bloggeratti, well isn’t that just “golden!” So to celebrate, I’ve got some gorgeous golden finds. Now of course, these items aren’t solid gold….we are, after all, talking about independent designers, and in some cases it’s more of a hint of gold. For me, independent design is about creative flair and entrepreneurial spirit. It’s about work that is fabulously designed, beautifully crafted, but also concerned with environmental and social issues. Not in a lecturing way, but rather an “I know I don’t NEED another top, but its organic bamboo and I should really show my support of independent designers” kind of way. If you’re still reading…stop…and check out my SLIDESHOW already!

Some people tell stories with words; others, with rooms. Fawn Galli is one of these people. The New York-based interior designer has turned her Brooklyn brownstone into a wonderland of magic and whimsy, as if the pages of her favorite storybooks opened up into charming little enclaves, each one a little different from the next. The first little black dress became popular in the 1920s when Coco Chanel introduced what Vogue called her “Ford” dress. Like Henry Ford’s cars, it only came in one color: black. And, like Henry Ford’s cars, it became an instant craze. And why shouldn’t it? It was designed not to show stains and the fit flattered most women. Today, of course, the little black dress is a staple in pretty much every female’s wardrobe. And in honor of Earth Day this past Tuesday, why not make your next little black dress green? Choose an eco-friendly authentic vintage version of this fashion icon and you’ll look super-chic while leaving the tiniest carbon footprint. Just click my SLIDESHOW for seven stunning inspirations.
Though I’m sure many would beg to differ, I’m going to say it anyway - you can’t shop forever. Cara & Co or anywhere else, you’re going to need a break, the same way that hours upon hours on end at Moscow’s top restaurants or hotels would have you craving a bit of a release. Seeing as Moscow’s known for its ultra-energetic nightlife, you’ve come to the right city, but you won’t be in the right place until you hit up Fabrique. Between the super slick interiors, international DJs playing the best club music in Moscow, and a cozy-chic V.I.P. room, Fabrique is definitely the place to be when you’re in the mood to party with 1,500 beautiful people - no kidding here, watch out for face control, or maybe wait until the jetlag passes. And speaking of wattage...nothing gives a room a glam rock vibe like a seriously stylin’ chandelier. Ready to to rock out? Check out my SLIDESHOW of the glammest home finds in the Hive!
If you’re anything like me, you’re eagerly awaiting the day when “athletic chic” doesn’t automatically translate into a tank top and Juicy track pants, or worse, Gucci sneakers. Shudder. Wasn’t Earth Day grand? There are so many easy ways to help the environment in your daily life, such as installing energy-efficient light bulbs, reading the newspaper online, recycling, using cloth napkins, plugging your appliances into power strips, and buying earth-friendly clothes. The last one is especially painless these days because buying dresses made from hemp or organic cotton doesn’t make you a patchouli-soaked hippie anymore. Everyone from Stella McCartney to H&M is offering apparel that has less of an impact on the environment, so it’s time to start shopping, but please donate your old clothes so someone else can enjoy them.
