I have friends who never wear make-up because it “takes too long.” People so often think that if you wear make-up, you’ve got to go all out. The truth is, five minutes in front of the mirror can make a huge difference. You don’t have to do the full-on face every time you go out (in fact, you shouldn’t). But a little mascara and bronzer can make a HUGE difference. Click READ MORE to check out my favorite 5 minute makeup must haves, including where you can find them and more importantly, how to apply them to your look!
While I can’t imagine dragging a trunk through a crowded airport terminal, there is something romantic about the notion of pulling your wardrobe out of a trunk while traveling the world. One of the biggest draws to peruse Louis Vuitton for me is the opportunity to ogle their display of vintage trunks. In an effort to regain their potential practicality I’ll give you three proposals: your trunk could be a coffee table, it could be storage for your out of season clothing, or as you’ll soon discover it could be your vanity. For a trunk to hold all of your beauty needs look to the Conran makeup trunk, for an option on wheels check out Bolsa Luggage, and for a small carrying case, Prada has got you covered. To find all this and much more check out my SLIDESHOW. Bon Voyage!

Makeup artists can seriously be magicians sometimes. They just whip out their bag of tricks, throw a bunch of stuff together, and all of a sudden you look like the most fabulous version of yourself. Have you ever tried to follow them step by step? It’s almost impossible! Fortunately, I am now in the position where I get to meet the magicians themselves, and luckily for us, they’re nicer than the real magicians, and more than willing to share their secrets. If you’re anything like me, you suffer from a severe case of Time Management Disorder and live in a continual state of being approximately 15 minutes late for EVERYTHING. As a result, I often have to make sacrifices in the spirit of getting to where I need to go, the most common being makeup. There’s nothing worse than going out and feeling hideously self-conscious about your appearance, so until I can learn how to better budget my time, learning tricks of the trade that will get me looking presentable in under a minute is essential! I already know what you’re thinking… blue eyeshadow is so seventies, right? Cheap, not chic? Well read on, because blue is here to stay and there is most definitely a blue eyeshadow, eyeliner or mascara for you!
This season, blue eye makeup was a staple on the runways, practically becoming the new black for many makeup artists, who often used deep indigo eyeliner in lieu of harsher blacks. The result? A softer, more mysterious appeal… which puts your eyes front and center without making them appear overdone. Models at Zac Posen, Tommy Hilfiger and Narisco Rodriguez all sported variations of this look and made it work magnificently with nude, matte red and rosebud pink lips. It’s rumored that wearing a blue eyeliner also makes tired and red eyes look brighter, whiter and more awake. Trust me… it’s true! Kate Hudson and Katie Holmes were recently spotted wearing this trend on their lower lash-lines.
Shockingly bright hues of yellow have dominated this season– on the runway, in fashion magazines and in saves here on Stylehive. We just can’t seem to get enough of this basic, cheerful color, and it’s even shown up in one of the most intimidating places for it to be worn… on the eyes.
Most women have never worn yellow eyeshadow and they possibly never will. Yellow is the color of daffodils, buttercups, primroses, canaries and butterflies. It also has the distinction of being the color of taxi cabs, school buses, raincoats, bumble bees and “danger” signs. For those of you willing to venture into bolder, slightly more treacherous territory… a sunny outlook on the eyes can brighten your baby blues, give you a gilded glow or just make a distinct statement!
Los Angeles-based women’s wear designer Jenni Kayne is a favorite among celebrities such as Michelle Pfeiffer, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, and Rachel Bilson who can’t get enough of her totally wearable, incredibly chic collections which include everything from apparel to hats to footwear. The impressive accomplishments don’t stop there, though. Beauty.com has enlisted Jenni as the first designer to create a fashion-forward bag that doubles as a cosmetic case or fashionable clutch as part of an upcoming promotion. With a purchase of $75 or more on Beauty.com, customers will receive the limited edition designer bag filled with a variety of deluxe beauty products, including celebrity favorites like DuWop Lip Venom (Lindsay Lohan is an outspoken fan) and products like Oscar Blandi Olio di Jasmine Hair Serum used to create sexy bed-head looks for the Jenni Kayne fall/winter ‘08 presentation, plus everything you could ever need to get through any beauty emergency.
Just because fashion week is over doesn’t mean we can’t still talk about it and try to re-create the sexy new makeup styles we fell in love with. Runway shows are so much more than just the clothing. Every aspect, from the hair, to the makeup, to the nail polish color is carefully considered and serve to enhance the underlying theme or message of the latest collection. It’s pretty amazing to consider that something as small as makeup palette could change the entire tone and vibe of a collection.
Women in ancient Greece colored their cheeks with crushed mulberries and red beet juice to make them appear more youthful, while ladies of Great Britain’s Victorian Age resorted to pinching theirs. Thankfully, today we have a plethora of much more convenient ways to give our cheeks a youthful bloom of color… and this spring, there’s no better way to do that than with a vivid, clear and bright pink, coral or red! There’s no need to fear “clown cheeks” because with a light hand and the correct application method, you can give yourself a fresh and innocent glow in just a few easy steps.
The Tracy Reese fall/winter ‘08 collection was inspired by the power of nature, a theme that extended beyond the clothes and onto the hair and makeup looks as well. I got the chance to hang backstage before the show to watch the magic unfold and of course, to find out exactly how to recreate the stunningly sexy looks.
Hair:
Stylist Edris Nicholls kept the hair loose, wavy, and elemental to correspond with Tracy’s collection- Read on for more on how you can replicate the rockin looks!
The Lela Rose fall/winter 2008 presentation mixed the sporty with the glamorous for the venturesome woman characterized by modern savoir faire. To reflect the effervescence and sexiness underlying this collection, beauty.com celebrity makeup artist Tina Turnbow created a rich, sensuous concept that was dramatic and minimal at the same time. Stylehive was backstage before the show where we got to see the magic unfold first-hand, and of course, the scoop on how to recreate the looks. Read on for all Tina’s must-have products - and what to do with them!
Design dilemmas, style standoffs, and now beauty blunders-- west coast editor Patricia Handschiegel can handle them all! This week’s question is a tough one-- just how can we get our eyeliner to stay on and stay put? As a victim of the smudge effect myself (and I wouldn’t exactly call it the sultry smoky eye effect either), I’m excited to see what she comes up with. After all, applying liner is no easy feat, so who wants to worry about where it’s going when we’re done? Click on over to Stylediary to see her answer, and let us know if you have tips and techniques that I-- I mean we-- can try!
Spring’s strong lip isn’t a quintessential shade of red. It’s a sweet shade of pink.
And just about any pink fits the bill. Cotton candy, ripe raspberry, pink zinfandel, lush bouganvillea or frosted fuschia.
Pink is one of those glorious colors that boasts a broad range of tones and saturation, so there is truly something for everyone. Given this, there is simply no excuse for not giving pink lips a chance this Spring… which is right now!
In honor of New York Fashion Week, we’re bringing you a super stylish rendition of our top ten fashion finds feature. Considering how scarce red-carpet awards shows are this season, when a show does in fact proceed as scheduled, you can expect celebrities to put their best face forward. Celebrity makeup artist Joanna Schlip drew inspiration from the subtly sexy makeup looks seen on the Christian Lacroix spring ‘08 runway presentation for the stunning look she gave Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo. A look so ethereally stunning, we just HAVE to emulate it. Here’s a step by step guide to get Ellen’s gorgeous, glowing look.
Rules, rules, rules! Never wear blue eyeshadow, never match your eyeshadow to your eye color, and most importantly… never match your eyeshadow to your clothing. Enough already! These days, rules are made to be broken. Store shelves and online beauty destinations are lined with hundreds of colors, representing the entire chromatic spectrum. Neutral browns, buffs, taupes and fawns needn’t be the only shades you liven your lids with. The new rule of thumb is if you’re wearing a color that looks great on you, then you can wear it on your eyes as well.
With all of the hoopla surrounding Christmas and New Year’s, it’s easy to forget that there’s actually a week separating the two, meaning there’s a week of outfits that sort of get pushed to the side because there’s no occasion behind them. And while we’d all love to live in our party dresses for longer than one night at a time, that just wouldn’t be fair to the rest of our wardrobes, so sprinkle a little festive fun on the week in between by adding some sparkly makeup and accessories to your casual outfits! They’re the easiest way to liven up dressing down, and will surely make the transition when party time rolls around. Oh, and because we just couldn’t resist…
We are well into the fall/winter season of fashion and beauty, and when we started out with the new trends way back in September we saw red lips everywhere from Gucci to Valentino a la homage to Veronica Lake. Lancome couldn’t even handle the onslaught that came with the limited edition red lipstick simply called Behnaz, which has reported to sell on EBay for upwards of $100. But designers sent us mixed messages, as the polar opposite of the scarlet mouth, the nude lip, presided at big-time shows like Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam and Marc Jacobs. Let’s ride the crimson tide and see which lip trends our favorite celebs decided to follow, or not, this year.
New Years Eve is all about the glitz and glam, so ring in the new year with bold dramatic eyes and sexy shimmer! Silvery pewters and rich bronzey browns are staples that create a lovely smokey eye when paired with smudgy kohl liner and volumizing mascara. For a standout pout, try soft neutral lips, but don’t be afraid to go bold (in this case, red!) if you decide to forgo darker eyes (both dramatic lips and eyes tend to look overwhelming). Need some help? Check out the slideshow of our top 10 fave finds - including sparkling shimmer powders and luscious lip plumping glosses - to achieve a festive, yet sultry NYE look.
Winter’s heating up with cozy cashmere sweaters, fondue sets, and strappy stilettos so gorgeous that we’ll be happy to leave our close-toed boots behind. So grab your favorite coffee mug- or check out ours- and snuggle up to our slideshow of today’s frost-ready finds, where we’ll tell you how much they cost and where you can buy them online!
After an extended period of warmth, cold is back with a vengeance (at least here out East) While winter has it’s upside - the holidays, incredible sales, the freedom to veer off course from your diet and hide behind chunky sweaters and layers - there are also vexing costs, primarily in the beauty department. With frigid temperatures come dry, itchy skin, unruly hair, blotchiness, puffiness, and the absence of a healthy summer glow to camouflage blemishes!
Is this the end of the Little Black Dress? Say it isn’t so! Read on to find out why our favorite closet staples are taking a backseat this holiday season. Plus stories on precautions to take before buying your new beau a holiday gift, the new face of Miu Miu, the end of glossy makeup, and all the details about TopShop FINALLY coming to Manhattan!
