Brave The Elements In A Cozy Chic Scarf!

Thank God it's cold outside! This gives me a chance to rummage through my collection of scarves and wrap one around my neck to protect me from the elements. In fact, whenever it's just a bit brisk out, I bust out one of my scarves just so I can wear it. There's just something about a long piece of fabric wrapped around my neck that makes me feel so chic and refined. I especially like thick scarves - like that chunky Maison Martin Margiela knit masterpiece. If you want something a little more subdued, Gap is always a good resource for the classic stripes and American Eagle has this snazzy, modernized fair isle number. For all you stylish Che Guevara t-shirt wearing radicals out there, try the Psycho Bunny Beatles Revolution scarf on for size (it's cashmere so you will feel extra fancy). But if you really want something adventurous you can pay a visit to Hogwarts School of Wizardry for a nice souvenir Gryffindor scarf, perfect for a round of Quidditch. Okay, just joking. Here are some other scarves to keep you warm.

Low Rise, Shaping, And Patterned Underwear... For Guys? Why, Yes.

When it comes to underwear, the ladies seem to have all the fun! For most guys, the choices traditionally have been between boxers or briefs with little consideration for colors, patterns and overall style. Thankfully, men's underwear is coming around and guys now have a multitude of choices for stylish undergarments. There are now fun patterns and great styles, including low rise and shaping options that allow guys to cater their underwear to their outerwear just like women can. Check out the slideshow for a look at 5 great options for the guys.

This Season, Thou 'Shawl' Wear Sweaters

A while back, the shawl neck collar was more common for retirement home residents and winter wonderland lumberjacks who lived in a log cabin and sipped coffee from tin cups and slept on bear skin rugs. Little did we know, they were way ahead of their time. Shawl necks are a hot commodity for both men and women since designers have added a modern magic wand to the classic neckline. From cardigans to hoodies to knitted skulls, the shawl neck is all over the place. Maison Martin Margiela, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren have all made some winter-friendly shawl knits that stay true to the nostalgia, but are sartorially relevant to the 21st century. The rolled neck comes in varying v-neck depths and it not only keeps you warm, but it is chic and it has this mature vibe to it. I don't know what it exactly is, but a shawl neck makes you look wise. And if you stick a pipe in your mouth, you will look like a genius Ivy League professor. My personal favorites are shawl neck cardigans and chunky pullovers, but take a gander at the slideshow to pick out a favorite of your own.

Lace Up Boots Suitable for Fashion Combat

The other day while browsing through the men's shoe department at Bloomingdale's, DSW and the ultimate shopping mecca, Barneys New York, I became fascinated with one particular item: black lace up boots. My sartorial senses honed in on the bad ass aesthetic that mostly works with just with a pair of jeans and T-shirt. For a more ambitious look, I imagined myself in an uber-modern John Varvatos slim suit with a silhouette-friendly pair of lace ups. I even tried on a pair of JV lace ups and I immediately fell in love. I walked around Barneys to give them a test drive, strutting around like a rock n' roll runway model. I felt like the coolest guy in the world - but then the sales associate chastised me. Even though it was written in the stars for me to be the owner of those $600 JV boots, I reluctantly gave the wood soled boots back to the glaring associate. As soon as I got home, I printed out a picture of the boots and put them on my vision board to satisfy the universe's desire for them to be in my closet. Until then, I am going to call my dad and have him send me his old Air Force combat boots so that I can relieve my boot craving. But if you don't have a direct connection to the armed forces, here are some combat boots for you to make you look chic when you romp around the city.

Be a Man! Carry a Murse.

For those of you who don't know, a "murse" is a man purse - but the key to rockin' one is to make it NOT look like a purse. I swear, I am just not diggin' it when I see urban hipster males gallivanting around the city with a tote on their shoulder. It makes them look like a Golden Girl rather than a metro-chic male. But I digress. I have been an advocate of the murse for a while now, and I am going to continue my murse campaign. There are many men out there who have to carry more than just a wallet with them when they head out to the concrete jungle. Ultimately, a murse is a messenger bag. They are functional, stylish, and suitable for an ambitious (or veteran) go-getter in the city who isn't ready for a droning financial district briefcase. Vertical bags seem to be the thing with murses right now - so get them while they're hot. If you want to play it safer, sling a classic messenger bag around your shoulder. Or, if the murse has handles, carry it by your side like a suitcase - just don't hang it on your shoulder like a Chloe purse. Check out the SLIDESHOW for some you can gnaw on.

Getting "Tweedy" With It

The leaves are starting to turn shades of brown and weather is starting to cool. You know what that means - it's time to bust out the tweed. It's manly. It's stylish. It's classic. The fabric's autumnal appeal is the perfect material to don during the chillier parts of the season and well into winter. The chivalrous fabric evokes scenes of Englishmen hunting on the countryside, but that doesn't mean you have to mount a horse and shoot some elk. It also doesn't necessarily have to be worn in blazer form. From Converse sneakers to newsboy caps, take a look at my SLIDESHOW for tweed items fit for the modern man. Just don't overdo it. You might end up looking like an upholstered couch in the den of an uptight college professor at Oxford. And P.S. - Ralph Lauren Rugby seems to be the front runner when it comes to tweedy necessities.

Hive 5: Men's Cardigans Are Cozy Fall Favorites

Changing seasons can be quite disorienting. The chilly weather prompts you too pull on a heavy winter coat, yet when you start moving around you're suddenly hot and sticky. Luckily, cardigan sweaters are just the right solution to this too hot, too cold dilemma. Seemingly created with fall in mind, cardigans are light enough to wear open on pleasant autumn afternoons, but can also be bulked-up with a scarf on crisp nights. This fall, I'm loving the simple colors and cozy knit textures of men's cardigans. Classic yet cuddle-provoking, cardigan sweaters are a perfect fall staple. I've compiled my five favorite men's cardigans from in and around the Hive, so check them out in my SLIDESHOW!

NYFW Runway Report: Rock & Republic Entrenched in Trenches

If you take anything away from what you're about to see from the Rock & Republic men's runway show, let it be the following: Trench coat, trench coat, trench coat. As in, go invest in one now, and come fall, fashion show, or freezing weather, you won't be sorry. But back to the show. I have to say, I'm loving the crisp, confident look that the blazers bring to the ensembles, and the leather jacket and boots combo was done so well that it managed to transcend the common motorcycle association. Unsurprisingly, the skinny jean appears to have made its way to man's land, so boys, if you've got the bod for them, by all means rock them, preferably Rock & Republic-style.
