Fantastic Plastic! Vintage Fashionistas Love Bakelite Jewelry!

Little girls might have plastic bracelets in their jewelry boxes, but we big girls aren't content with just any ol' plastic. No, we want the real deal and that means vintage Bakelite. Bakelite, like many scientific finds, was discovered by accident in 1907 and it soon became known as "the material of a thousand uses." It wasn't long, however, before designers discovered that this fire-resistant plastic, originally created for industrial purposes, was also perfect for bracelets, necklaces, earrings and pins. The Leaves Are Falling, But These Designers Are On The Rise!

Fall is here - it's official! From where I stand it looks an awful lot like summer, but I WILL get my boots and cashmere out. To celebrate the change of seasons and that delightful time when leaves start to change color and fall, here some of my favorite pieces from emerging designers. If you're looking for something sweet and petite, check out the Tiny Leaf Necklace by Sarah Hood - it's delicious! Of course, not everything is that delicate - Deadly Squire expects you to spit up on their work - after all, it is a baby bib! New York Fashion Week Runway: Tracy Reese Embraces Every Color Under the Sun

As was the case with her Fall 2008 collection, Tracy Reese drew inspiration from nature for Spring/Summer 2009, with a lineup that marked a beautiful progression through the seasons. Stunning colors abounded: winter white, sky blue, garden green, desert neutral, yellow, watercolor pastels, vibrant colored prints - if you see it outside, chances are it walked down this runway. Tracy balanced the super sweet, ultra-femme vibe of the collection with bold and uber-glam accessories including large old-school glamour earrings and multi-chain lariat necklaces. This presentation also marked the debut of Black Label, a high-end version of the signature collection, with frothy organza, airy chiffon, and rich brocades, perfect for channeling your inner glamour-girl. Jewelry Class: Alexandrite a Worthy Upstart in the World of Rubies and Turquoise

In the far-reaching history of gemstones in jewelry, alexandrite is one of the "newer" stones, having been discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in the 1830s and named for Czar Alexander II at his coming of age ceremony; other gems such as turquoise, rubies, and pearls, have deeply ancient roots. So what's so exciting about relative newcomer alexandrite, affectionately called "alex" by many jewelers? For starters, it's truly scarce: natural alexandrite is extremely rare, especially in sizes over one carat. But the most fascinating aspect of this gem is its color-change characteristic, with the best quality stones displaying a brilliant verdant green in sunlight or fluorescent light and shifting to a remarkably rich red in incandescent light or candlelight; lesser quality stones are still unusually lovely, showing blue-green in fluorescent light and plummy purple in incandescent light.
