From Underwear To Outerwear, The Evolution Of The Corset

Corsetry has come a long way since the 15th century days of the handmaiden lacing the noblewoman so tightly that she could scarcely breathe. Corsets began as tools to shape a woman's body, permanently in many cases. They were hard, ugly, unbending and never meant to be seen - certainly not by men. While the modern corset is often used for the purpose of shaping, the effects are less permanent and the garment itself is usually meant to be viewed - often in the bedroom, but recent trends have corset like garments mixing with jeans and skirts as clubwear or even casualwear.
