I’m fiercely on the hunt for summer wardrobe items and trust me when I say, it has been ridiculously hard to find the perfect colorful low heel. I’ve scoured high and low, everywhere offline and online in pursuit but to no true avail. The gorgeous teal Miu Miu strappy flat wedges on way sale at Barneys this past weekend couldn’t be had and now the fervor is only worse. It had me going on full blast this morning hitting every possible shoe-carrying website and alas, found a pair to love, plus four other that are totally divine. Here’s a SLIDESHOW of the goodies.
It’s one thing to read magazines, and another to take what’s in them and make it wearable for the street. Please accept my apologies. I have been going on and on with test driving dresses for weeks on end and almost forgot that that tops are also red hot this season. So yesterday at Bloomingdales I focused. I stayed strong and forced myself to only audition tops, five of them, in spring’s hottest styles. I only broke the ban to include a pair of Hudson jeans, but that was just because I had on a print skirt that wouldn’t match with any of it. Here’s a SLIDESHOW to satisfy the upper half.

If you’ve had the same kind of love/hate relationship with Old Navy that most fashionistas seem to have, you might want to get ready to sway back toward the L-word. A few months ago, the retail giant announced it was going to try to go chic, bringing in new designers and new ideas. Fast forward to the present and all of the sudden it’s a pretty good place for low-cost, season perfect items that’ll carry you well past spring into the hot days of summer. Prints, tube tops, short shorts and dozens of dresses. I’m not trying to put it out there like this, but I’ve been there twice and barely left empty handed. It takes some serious talent to transform an everyday world into a cool, fashion editorial quality photo spread. First, there’s lighting, and of course, you need a stylist, makeup artist, somebody handling the hair, and more than likely at least one assistant. Lunch in LA is like a disheveled runway show. Layering is the secret sneaky style trick everybody has in their hip pocket. It’s the quick and instant update, the lifesaver, the reinventer. Just as little as two pieces and suddenly you have a good part of an outfit. It can be done clean and crisply, bold or messy, and never takes more than just a few quick moves. You probably know O’Neal McKnight because you have rocked out to his song “Check Your Coat” at the club or have seen the video on VH1 or MTV. What you probably didn’t know is when you look at Diddy, Russell Simmons, or Usher and say, “Damn, that man has style,” it’s likely because O’Neal McKnight made them so. Wardrobe stylist for so many events, videos, and mega-stars that I don’t have enough space to list them, O’Neal has now transformed himself into the ultimate hybrid of music and fashion. It might seem super sunny and blissfully warm in Los Angeles when you’re looking at it from The Hills or pages of People Magazine, but trust me, it gets plenty cold at night here. Kind of the way it does in the desert and that has been known to practically kill people. Being one who has endured sub-zero winters for a large part of my life, I know this doesn’t hold a candle to what some parts of the globe are enduring at the moment, but I am a firm believer that we can all appreciate an amazing coat to brighten up the dead of winter. And we suffered for it. Two words: Chino pants. Ah but now, thanks to Al Gore (or whoever invented “online”), style setters everywhere can have great skill and taste AND get access to whatever hipster stuff they love, anytime, anywhere. Porridge’s designer has said she takes a cue from vintage fabrics. Virginia Johnson’s prints have been known to be inspired by what she sees in nature. Diane Von Furstenberg, perhaps the queen of all prints, obviously had something going on in the 60s and 70s, because her creations from the era (which she now brings back every season) are some kind of funky and fun. The current season is stocked full of styles from wrap dresses to baby dolls to long frocks and mini cuts. Colors, shapes, stars, checks – there is no end to the bevy of options. I don’t know where you Stylediarists get it, but you are some fashionable people. Let’s just start with all of your outfits. They’re cool, creative, trendy, classic, and everything in between, with tons of mad style through and through. Skirt looks, great dress combinations. I won’t lie. I scout look books all the time and work people’s ideas, too! If that’s not enough, you’ve all got these amazing pieces, the kind of stuff that makes editors use words like “uber-chic” and “drool-worthy,” and that’s not even counting the huge lot of you that have killer blogs on top of it, too. There is a reason why we all love comfortable clothes. It all starts out innocently enough, of course. Our parents swaddle us in blankets, onesies and footy pajamas, all in the softest of cottons. This continues onward to rompers and track suits, then comfortable jeans and sweatshirts. You get the picture. Durable, easy to wear and keep clean, it’s no wonder we as adults can’t get enough of it. It’s why we love companies like Juicy Couture and James Perse, and still live in our old college sweatshirt. The problem is, it can be difficult to make cozy basics look chic. Stylediarist –Primavera- shows how to do it!
Old school rocker girls like Joan Jett and Blondie were just so cool. They wore ripped up t-shirts and smeared makeup and just rocked out, kicking over speakers and breaking guitars while singing about love being a battlefield and loving rock and roll. There was no bubble gum pink or lip syncing. These girls were true bad assess who jammed in leather pants and tore up t-shirts and toured around with their equally cool bands. Stevie Knicks, Pat Benetar, the girls from Heart. They’re iconic. This isn’t your Hilary Duff or Avril Lavigne, people, but girls that played as tough as the boys of their era and had the style to prove it. It’s so hard not to think you’ve got to have everything when it comes to fashion. I mean, you get the killer shoe and suddenly, you want the bag. Get the bag, you want the dress. Get the dress, you want the amazing necklace… it can go on and on. I know it. Millions of dollars are spent every year more or less making style complicated. But, then there are those little flecks of glorious light who turn the tables and remind us all that you can be uber-fashionista with a simple one-two punch of talent and great pieces. We’ve discussed the French and fashion before, how they’re, like, the world’s style muse and that everybody talks about it. Like one big giant country-size Kate Moss, the land is home of fashion mavens of all kinds. Always so cool and so creative – yet, unassuming and effortless as if everybody was just born with the innate skill to find incredible items and then wear them better than anybody else on the planet.
