Edun's Stylishly Sustainable Fall 2008 'Nocturne' Collection

Bono is known for his philanthropic ways, so it's no surprise that he and his wife, Ali Hewson, created Edun, a label that might just be the most socially conscious and civic-minded luxury line in the fashion world to date. "The whole purpose of Edun is to work sustainably in Africa, India and Peru," explains Hewson. "Those communities have people who have lost jobs because companies have moved to other countries for 20 cents less a T-shirt. We feel it's important to stay in those communities and build up trade there because at the end of the day, trade is going to do more than aid. This is a way of trying to balance that and do business on this continent - and still make a profit." Edun's Fall 2008 collection, called "Nocturne," is just as appealing as the cause it represents. When Hewson swung by San Francisco to promote the first-ever pop up store at Azalea in Hayes Valley, I had the opportunity to check out the laid-back, yet stylishly brooding "nocturnal" collection. "We just wanted to do a pop up store because we don't have any retail stores of our own," says Hewson. "For us to be able to show the collection in its entirety and get a reaction to the entire collection rather than just single pieces." For all you San Franciscans, the pop-up store runs through Nov. 17, but if you can't make it, Hewson said that they do plan on opening a stand alone Edun store in the future. Till then, check out some of these Edun goodies for men and women in the slideshow.

Cool Stuff Made of Reclaimed Wood!

From furniture to home accessories to jewelry, artisans and even mainstream companies are now making objects from one of the greenest materials available: reclaimed wood. Reclaimed wood can come from a variety of sources--dilapidated homes, barn beams, and rail road tracks, to name a few--and its use keeps manufacturers from further depleting our world's forests. What's so great about that? Deforestation is one cause of global warming, not to mention all of the wildlife, ecosystems, and biodiversity that are harmed by clearing our forests. So, do the world a favor and shop for products made out of reclaimed, recycled, or sustainably harvested wood! Need some ideas? Check out my slideshow of cool products made with reclaimed wood!

Eco Style: Shake Your Booties The Environmentally Friendly Way

I've never been a summer wardrobe kind of girl. You might say that I endure summer fashion. How strange is that coming from someone who has lived in sunny Southern California her whole life?! But, I relish the time when the seasons change and we move into cooler weather and...wait for it...BOOTS! I love boots and there is no question that boots, short and tall, fun and elegant, are in for fall. They're everywhere and eco fashion designers are getting it so right this season. With Stella McCartney and Cri de Coeur leading the way earning two of my picks, here are 10 of my favorite eco-friendly and vegan boots to help you get a jump on the season. An educational note: There is a difference between an eco-friendly shoe and a vegan shoe. Vegan means that absolutely no animal products are used, but the materials are not necessarily sustainable. Call it socially responsible. Eco friendly means the materials used are either recycled, vegetable tanned leathers (as opposed to chemically tanned) or other sustainable textiles. Click on the SLIDESHOW to shop them all, and for more great eco fashion, go to whiteapricot.com.

Next Big Thing: Bodkin Redefines Eco-Chic

What do you get when you combine two friends, an eye for impeccable design, a stint as a fashion features editor at Nylon, and a background on sustainability? Bodkin. Designer Samantha Pleet and writer Eviana Hartman brought their vast interests together seamlessly for the fashion-forward, Brooklyn-based collection, but as Hartman says, it is the whole process - sourcing the materials and knowing where they come from - that defines them as a socially conscious label. And while they're both passionate about this cause, they try not to let it overwhelm their design philosophy. Pleet's signature fairytale-esque style adds a bit of lighthearted flair to the sleek, streamlined collection, giving it a playfulness many other sustainability-focused labels lack. The color palette is limited to black and cream, but this lends a level of sophistication also missing from most eco-friendly fashion. Click my SLIDESHOW to see what Bodkin's all about!

Editor's Pick: Cole Scego Design Is Made In the Shade (Literally)

Sometimes people surprise you. Take designer Cole Scego. At first glance, his color-saturated work had me thinking he spends his days and nights in the most happening of urban locales. But no. Cole actually lives in the woods of rural Missouri with his wife and two Weimaraners. When asked if he feels at all isolated from city life, Cole maintains the bright lights just weren't for him! Turns out, it's not where you are but who you are and what you believe in that really matters. And Cole's line of quirky, offbeat furniture reflects both his love of nature, and concern for the environment. Check out my slideshow of my favorite furniture and art from Cole Scego Design.

10 Green Nursery Items for the Eco-Chicest Kid on the Block

From organic cotton onesies to vintage wood toys, the current baby boom and celebrity bump watch means green baby items are in major demand. With all of Brad's environmental efforts in New Orleans, we wouldn't be surprised to hear that the tiniest Brangelina clan members are the most green and glam of the under-6 set. And if Angie's SAG dress really does bode twins for Brangelina's furniture? We're guessing that's one nursery that'll be maxed-out in good-for-the-earth, good-for-the-health greenness.
