The stakes were ultra-high on Wednesday night’s episode of Project Runway as the designers were presented with one of the most intimidating challenges to date. At first, it sounded easy enough: design a day-to-night look for a high-powered, glamorous woman, but of course, it got way juicier. In the workroom, the designers are greeted by their client, and guest-judge, for this challenge- the one and only Brooke Shields, who specifies that the look will be for her character Wendy Healy on the hit show Lipstick Jungle and that she will actually wear the winning look in season 2! Talk about every designer’s dream come true! After reviewing all the sketches, Brooke selected six designers to serve as team leaders. The leaders selected partners from the remaining six and then it was off to work! Tensions mounted, visions clashed, and the pressure to make it work was insurmountable. Sadly, someone had to go. Olympic fever is all around and Project Runway was not exempt! On Wednesday’s episode, Tim took the designers on another famous field trip, this time to the Armory Track and Field Training Center- the largest indoor track in the world where Olympians train for track and field events. There, the group met this week’s guest judge- U.S. Olympian Apolo Ohno, who presented their challenge: create a womens-wear look for the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics. For inspiration, the designers visited the center’s museum which holds countless images from Olympics past. With a half hour to sketch and $150 to spend on fabrics at Mood, the designers were given a day to create a look that was chic, wearable, sporty, and most importantly, one that represented the American spirit. Some designers eagerly embraced this challenge, others completely lost sight of the task at hand. However, someone had to get the boot. At this year’s Peabody Awards, there’s no denying that the best dressed attendee was Heidi Klum, who pretty much nabs that title at every event she attends. According to Tim Gunn, the secret to Heidi’s fabulousness is her strong sense of self-awareness. Nina Garcia, on the other hand, believes it comes from Heidi’s immense self-confidence. After hearing both of their theories, I asked the woman herself.

On last week’s episode of Project Runway, the designers created cocktail dresses with their models as clients. This week, the party continued as the designers were challenged to construct outfits for a night out on the town using the city of New York as their muse. The contestants were broken up into four groups and dropped off in different parts of the city. With digital cameras in tow and the city at their fingertips, the groups snapped away and frantically searched for the perfect source of inspiration to draw upon to capture the essence of this wildly eclectic city. As is usually the case, some thrived and attained the ever-so-elusive WOW-factor, while others floundered, making it almost impossible to predict who would take the win and who would be out. However, someone had to go and I just spoke to the latest bootee to get the scoop on what REALLY happened. Click READ MORE to find out.
No matter what she does, where she goes, or what she’s wearing, Heidi Klum always looks painfully perfect and possesses a seemingly effortless knack of incredible style. I think the question on everyone’s mind is: how does she do it?? That was certainly the question on my mind when I caught up with the supermodel at the 2008 Peabody Awards, where Tim Gunn, Nina Garcia, and even Harvey Weinstein were quick to name Heidi the best dressed attendee. The crazy challenges, the fashion, the immense creativity, the A-list guest judges- there are countless reasons as to why the show Project Runway is such a phenomenon. However, there’s no denying that the real heart and soul of the show lies with the one and only Heidi Klum, whose infectious effervescence and absolute adorableness will never get old! I got the chance to chat with the the gorgeous supermodel in the flesh at the Peabody Awards, where she, like Runway mentor Tim Gunn, was understandably shocked and humbled that her little show about fashion was the recipient of this prestigious award. Click READ MORE for part 1 of my interview with Heidi for her reaction and why this award means so much to her.
While the premiere episode marked a revival of the old, the second episode of the hit show Project Runway explored something new. At first, the challenge seemed easy enough: Design a cocktail dress with your model as your client. However, it wouldn’t be Project Runway without some twists. Firstly, the materials had to be eco-friendly, and secondly, the models, not the designers, would be purchasing the fabrics- cue the panic! While the models struggled to determine how long a yard is, the designers stressed over what they’d be forced to work with. Some were pleasantly surprised, while others were forced to push their creativity thresholds to the limit to make it work. To determine how well the designers could appeal to the young and fabulous, it was only fitting that one of the most glamorous young stars out there was the guest judge- actress/Vegan shoe designer Natalie Portman.

When it comes to cultivating a fabulous personal style, every fashion insider will tell you it’s not about the hottest trends or fanciest labels, it’s about self-awareness and having a solid understanding of what works and what doesn’t on you personally. Tim Gunn even pointed to self-awareness as the main ingredient in Heidi Klum‘s recipe for fabulousness. So now we know what we need, but how do we get it? I caught up with the fabulously fashionable Nina Garcia, clad in a Lela Rose sheath dress paired with fierce black studded Alaia platforms, at the Peabody Awards where I asked just that. While she may come across all mean and tough as a judge on the hit show Project Runway, when something is truly spectacular, Nina Garcia will be the first to sing its praises. I caught up with this high-powered fashion editor at the Peabody Awards and when asked who the best dressed guest was, she, like Project Runway mentor Tim Gunn, didn’t hesitate in giving the title to the one and only Heidi Klum and was happy to offer her take on Heidi’s secrets to having such a fabulous sense of style. To begin Season 5 of the hit show Project Runway, the 16 mega-talented contestants were taken back to the way beginning with a repeat of the infamous Gristedes challenge from the first episode of the very first season. The designers had their pick of raw materials from the aisles of the supermarket to construct a garment that would wow the judges. From plastic cups to coffee filters to garbage bags to diapers and so on, the designers all scrambled to take these unconventional materials and make it work. However, someone had to be the first to go. Click READ MORE for our exclusive interview with the first auf’d contestant.

In last night’s episode of Project Runway, the designers dispersed to their own corners of the world to begin begin working on their 12-piece collections. Radar Magazine put out a Most Powerful Names in Fashion poll in their issue on stands today, which coincidentally is the same day fashion week started. The controversial poll puts numbers to a trend we’ve all been noticing (and in Stylehive’s case, been a part of) over the past few years. Namely, big names in fashion, like Vogue editor Anna Wintour, are seeing their influence wane, while reality stars like Lauren Conrad and Tim Gunn, and social style networks like Stylehive, are creating all of the fashion buzz!
You can check out the article on radaronline.com. But first, we wanted to get your take on some of the power players. Answer our own poll question, then go to their website to find out Radar’s Power Rankings!
On Wednesday night’s episode of Project Runway, the seven remaining contestants were presented with clothesline upon clothesline of Levi’s denim and challenged to snag as much as they could to create an iconic denim look that captures the spirit of the 501 legacy. Ricky was determined to blow everyone away and prove that despite his repeated stints in the bottom two, he deserved to be there. Christian complained a lot. Chris had a tête-à-tête with his garment. Rami was self-assured, as always. Sweet P reworked her entire concept in response to Tim Gunn‘s horrified reaction to the original one. Victorya seemed really bored. And poor Jillian teetered on the brink of a nervous collapse for the duration of the challenge as she raced against the clock to bring her complex vision into fruition.
This week we gave you trends to leave in 2007 and trends to embrace in 2008. We also get the scoop from Project Runway’s latest bootee, Tim Gunn’s fashion secrets, and Raquel Welch’s beauty secrets. Who knew we could be so giving? Take advantage of all the secrets we’re getting for you! All that and more made this the best week on Stylehive since last week! Get the scoop while it’s hot.
I think every woman wishes she had a miniature Tim Gunn to carry so she could consult him during fashion emergencies. Because when it comes to taste and style, Tim’s opinion is at the forefront, especially on this season’s Project Runway, where Tim Gunn‘s expertise has been showcased to the max, as the designers who follow his advice get praised, and those who don’t, get pulverized. I caught up with the style guru/mentor to learn from the master. Read on to see what Tim had to say about style, fashion faux-pas, and cultivating a unique sense of style.
